Louisville Bats News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Louisville Bats (3-4) defeated the Columbus Clippers (4-3) by an 8-0 score in Wednesday's series finale at Huntington Park. The back-to-back wins give Louisville its first series win before they head to Louisville Slugger Field for their home opener on Thursday night.
It was all Bats from the jump, with Louisville jumping on Columbus starting pitcher Shao-Ching Chiang for three runs in the top of the first. The first run of the contest came from none other than Josh VanMeter, whose line drive single brought in Sherman Johnson to give Louisville a 1-0 lead. The Bats would score six runs off Chiang, capped off by VanMeter's solo homer in the fourth which gave the Bats a 6-0 lead. For VanMeter, it was his fourth homer in his last three games after hitting two in Tuesday night's win, becoming the first Bat with at least four in a three-game span since all-time minor league home run leader Mike Hessman did it in 2013.
Louisville starting pitcher Lucas Sims (1-0, 3.24) was brilliant in his second start of the season, earning his first win. The right-hander went 5.1 innings and did not allow a run, giving up just two hits while walking two and striking out seven on 97 pitches, 58 strikes. Bats relievers Jesus Reyes, Sal Romano and Anthony Bass combined for 3.2 innings of scoreless relief out of the bullpen, giving the Bats their first shutout win of 2019.
VanMeter kept up his torrid pace, reaching base four times, going 2-for-3 with the home run and also drawing a pair of walks. Brian O'Grady went 3-for-5, already his second three-hit game of the season, while Johnson and Nick Longhi also poured in two-hit performances in the Bats' 8-0 win.
The Bats come home to play their home opener tomorrow, with first pitch set for 7 p.m. against the Gwinnett Stripers. The Bats are celebrating their 20th season at Louisville Slugger Field all season long, and will kick off the celebration with a 20th season calendar giveaway, along with many other great promotions.
