Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA. - A two-out double by Gorkys Hernandez broke a 1-1 tie in the ninth as the Indianapolis Indians defeated the Gwinnett Braves, 2-1, on Tuesday night at Coolray Field. Jair Jurrjens pitched a scoreless inning in his final start for Gwinnett before his start for Atlanta in Boston on Friday. Luis Durango, Tyler Pastornicky and Felix Pie all recorded multi-hit games, but couldn't help Gwinnett scratch across more than a run.
The G-Braves, losers of 16 of their last 21 games, remain 5.0 games behind Charlotte for first place in the International League South Division. The Knights (42-31) were routed by Columbus, 13-2, on Tuesday night.
Jurrjens made the start and worked just 1.0 inning in his final tune-up for the big leagues. The right-hander struck out two and walked two, throwing 20 pitches, nine for strikes. Buddy Carlyle relieved the starter and was masterful for 4.0 innings of scoreless baseball. The right-hander struck out seven, a new single-game season high for a Gwinnett reliever, yielded two hits and walked one.
Gwinnett jumped out to an early lead in the fourth inning. After the first two hitters were retired, Stefan Gartrell rifled a single up the middle off Indianapolis starter Jeff Locke. The next batter, Pie, laced a shot into right center for a two-out triple scoring Gartrell for a 1-0 advantage.
The G-Braves' lead lasted until the seventh inning when Brian Friday scalded a double down the left-field line and scored three batters later on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Hernandez. Dusty Hughes (BS, 1) received a blown save as he surrendered an unearned run on two hits and yielded two walks in the inning. A fielding error by second baseman Lance Zawadzki helped set up the tying run.
Jaye Chapman (L, 2-3) worked a scoreless eighth inning, but would not have the same luck in the ninth. Friday doubled for the second time on the night, then took third on a sacrifice bunt by Tony Sanchez. Hernandez followed with the game-winning hit, a two-out ground rule double to left-center. Chapman struck out Starling Marte to end the inning, but the damage was done.
Evan Meek (W, 2-2), who stranded two inherited runners for Chris Leroux in the eighth, retired all three batters he faced in the ninth. Including 6.0 innings of one-run baseball from starter Locke, Indianapolis pitchers combined to allow one run on 10 hits while striking out 10. Daniel McCutchen, pitching on Major League rehab for the Pittsburgh Pirates, turned in a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.
Gwinnett pitchers combined on a season-high 15 strikeouts including Carlyle's seven, but were supported by just a run of offense. Durango (2-for-4), Pastornicky (2-for-4, two doubles) and Pie (2-for-4, triple, RBI) all finished with multi-hit games in the loss.
Hernandez went 1-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Indianapolis.
The Gwinnett Braves (37-36) continue their nine-game homestand with the third game of the four-game series against the Indianapolis Indians (42-29) on Wednesday night at Coolray Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. The G-Braves will start Eric Junge (4-6, 4.48) against right-hander Daniel Cabrera (2-3, 4.81) of the Indians. The game will be broadcast on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM in Gainesville, GA with Tony Schiavone calling the play-by-play. The television broadcast will air on CSS.
