Rochester Red Wings News Release
TUESDAY, JUNE 19, 2012 w FRONTIER FIELD
GAME #71 - HOME GAME #32 - 7:05 P.M.
DURHAM BULLS (31-41) at ROCHESTER RED WINGS (32-38)
LHP ALEX TORRES (1-3, 7.47) vs. LHP LUKE FRENCH (1-1, 4.57)
DURHAM SANDWICH: The Rochester Red Wings tonight play the 2nd game of their 4-game series vs. Durham (Rays), continuing an 8-game homestand that also includes a 4-game set against International League South Division leader Charlotte (White Sox) Friday-Monday. Then it's back on the road for a quick 4-game trip to Lehigh Valley (Phillies) June 26-29.
a The Red Wings are in the midst of playing 40 consecutive games against teams outside the IL North Division. They are 18-15 in the stretch thus far. The Wings opened the season with 37 consecutive games against North foes, going 14-23 in those contests. Their final 14 games leading into the All-Star break are against North rivals.
a Do note, the Red Wings will play a doubleheader vs. Lehigh Valley July 8, making up an April 21 rainout at Frontier Field.
IN BETTER SHAPE: At 32-38, the Red Wings are 4 games better than they were at this same point last season and in 2010. Rochester this year is only one game off the 2009 pace (33-37) and 2 games better than the 2008 team (30-40).
a The Red Wings are 18-15 in their last 33 games beginning May 15 and are 23-22 beginning May 3.
a The Wings will reach the official halfway point of the 2012 season following tomorrow's game vs. Durham, the 72nd of the year.
THERE'S STILL NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Red Wings yesterday lost to Durham 6-1 and tonight look to avoid losing 2 straight games at Frontier Field for the first time since getting swept in a 3-game series vs. Syracuse (Nationals) April 24-26. The loss also was Rochester's first to open a homestand since losing the home opener to Buffalo 4-2 on April 7.
a Despite last night's setback, the Red Wings are still 22-17 at Frontier Field, including an 18-13 mark as the home team. They split a pair of 4-game series against the Empire State Yankees to account for the other 8 contests.
a The Red Wings have given up 6 runs in both of their last 2 games at Frontier, yet still have a 2.66 ERA (98 ER/331.0 IP) along Morrie Silver Way overall. Only Indianapolis has a lower ERA in their home ballpark at 2.25 (77 ER/308.0 IP).
a Including one yesterday, Rene Rivera leads the team with 4 home runs at Frontier Field.
HOMER HAPPY: The Red Wings have homered in a season-high 5 straight games. Rene Rivera hit a solo blast in the 3rd inning yesterday vs. Durham to extend the run. The Wings last homered in at least 6 straight games August 28-Septmeber 2, 2009, when they went 6 games in a row with a homer.
a The Red Wings have already homered 13 times in 17 games in June after hitting 15 homers in 30 games in May.
a The Red Wings have hit 38 home runs overall, tied with Lehigh Valley for the 2nd-lowest total in the league. Only Indianapolis (Pirates) has hit less with 37.
a Clete Thomas and Michael Hollimon are tied for the team lead with 5 home runs. That is the lowest team-leading total in the IL. Lehigh Valley has the 2nd-lowest team-leading total of 6 from Erik Kratz, Derrick Mitchell, and Cody Overbeck.
a The Red Wings are 14-15 when they homer, including a 6-0 mark when they homer 2 or more times in a game.
COMING UP CLUTCH: Including a 1-for-4 effort last night vs. Durham, the Red Wings are batting .400 (14-for-35) with runners in scoring positioning in their 5 games. The recent success comes after going just 1-for-22 (.045) with runners in scoring position in the 4-game series at Indianapolis June 9-12. Despite the recent success, the Wings are 3-2 in their last 5 games. They lost 3 of 4 at Indianapolis.
a The Red Wings are hitting .234 (131-for-561) with runners in scoring position overall, tied with Gwinnet (150-for-642) for 9th in the IL. Buffalo (.233, 137-for-589), Durham (.209, 120-for-757), Louisville (.222, 138-for-622), and Norfolk (.231, 147-for-635) all have lower average with men in scoring position.
a Despite the recent success with runners in scoring position, the Red Wings still rank last in the IL with 230 runs scored. They trail the next closest team, Durham, by 25 runs.
START ME UP: Only one Red Wings' starter in the last 8 games has pitched past the 5th inning. Cole De Vries turned the trick with 7.0 scoreless innings in Rochester's 4-1 win at Louisville Friday. Red Wings' starters have an 8.49 ERA (28 ER/29.2 IP) in the last 8 contests.
a Wings' starters are 18-21 with a 3.98 ERA (154 ER/348.1 IP) overall.
a Red Wings' relievers, meanwhile, have a 3.42 ERA (10 ER/26.1 IP) in their last 6 games after giving up 10 runs in 6.0 innings in the 16-0 loss at Indianapolis June 11. The relief corps has a 3.58 ERA (100 ER/251.1 IP) overall.
a Rochester's first strikeout tonight will be the 500th for the pitching staff.
THIS DATE IN BASEBALL HISTORY: In 1988, Twins' righthander Bert Blyleven wins his 250th career game, a 3-1 triumph vs. Seattle...Jeff Reardon also notched his 20th save, giving him 7 straight 20-save seasons...in 1973, the Reds' Pete Rose and the Dodgers' Willie Davis both collect their 2,000th career hit...Rose accomplishes the feat at San Francisco and Davis turns the trick vs. Atlanta.
