INDIANAPOLIS -- Left-hander Tom Gorzelanny tossed eight scoreless innings, while designated hitter Raul Gonzalez and right fielder Adam Boeve collected three hits apiece as Indianapolis ended Charlotte's 15-game road winning streak with a 1-0 victory Thursday night at Victory Field.
The Indians, who continue to lead the International League's West Division by two games over Toledo, improve to 22-18 on the season. The Knights, who still have the best record in all of professional baseball, fall to 31-9 overall and 19-4 on the road.
Indianapolis evens the season series at three games apiece. The Indians are the only team to defeat Charlotte since April 24 (a 22-game span). The Knights, who were blanked for the first time this season (40 games), also saw their seven-game overall winning streak come to an end in the two-hour and four-minute pitchers' duel.
Indianapolis scored the only run it would need in the bottom of the eighth. LF Rich Thompson and Gonzalez drilled back-to-back singles before Thompson scored on 3B Yurendell de Caster's sacrifice fly to right field. Gonzalez, who has now reached base safely in 23 of his last 24 contests, registered a 3-for-4 performance. De Caster extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a 1-for-3 effort, while Tribe RF Adam Boeve went 3-for-3 in his Triple-A debut.
Gorzelanny (8.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 SO), who has now worked 16 consecutive scoreless innings, improved to 3-2 with the win. The 23-year-old used just 94 pitches to get through eight frames.
Indianapolis RHP Josh Sharpless (1.0 IP, 1 SO), who was also making his Triple-A debut, worked a perfect ninth for the save.
Knights RHP Tim Redding (8.0 IP, 10 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO) was pinned with the loss, falling to 4-3.
The two clubs wrap up their four-game series Friday night at 7 p.m. RHP Brandon Duckworth is scheduled to start for Indianapolis, while RHP Sean Tracey is expected to get the nod for Charlotte.
The game will be televised by WHMB-TV 40 with Howard Kellman and Jim Barbar calling all the action. The contest will also be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com as Scott McCauley and Greg Rakestraw have the call.
