(Indianapolis, IN) - The Indianapolis Indians used nine walks and a pair of mid-game rallies to sweep away the Pawtucket Red Sox with a 5-1 win on Thursday night at Victory Field.
The Indians (36-30) outscored Pawtucket (33-33), 21-9, in the three-game sweep, dropping the Red Sox' record back to .500 and handing the club its first three-game losing streak since May 7-9.
The 21 runs surrendered in the series equaled the total that the PawSox had allowed in their first 11 games in June prior to heading to Indiana.
Pawtucket starter Henry Owens (4-3) did not allow a run in his first three innings, but allowed two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth.
Owens walked the first two batters he faced but pitched out of first-inning trouble. However, after he surrendered a walk and a single to begin the fourth inning, Owens could not escape.
Wily Garcia chopped a ball to the left of Owens that he failed to pick up with his bare hand. The error loaded the bases with no outs.
Two batters later, Ed Easley drew a walk to force home the first run of the game. The next batter, Gift Ngoepe, grounded a potential double-play ball to second base that Jose Vinicio bobbled, forcing him to settle for the out at first base.
Indianapolis added to its 2-0 lead in the fifth inning. The first four batters all reached base, knocking Owens out of the game.
Max Moroff walked and scored on Adam Frazier's triple high off the right field fence. Josh Bell drove home Frazier with a single to center and Jason Rogers followed with an RBI double to extend the Indians' advantage to 5-0.
Reliever Wesley Wright entered the game and recorded three straight outs to extinguish any further damage. He tossed three scoreless frames.
Indianapolis starter Wilfredo Boscan (5-5) dealt six shutout innings, surrendering four hits and no walks.
Pawtucket brought home its lone run in the seventh inning.
With one out and Justin Maxwell on third base, Dan Butler singled to center. The center fielder Frazier's throw to third to try to nail Maxwell sailed out of play, allowing Maxwell to score.
Deven Marrero followed with his second hit of the game, a single to left field, but left fielder Pedro Florimon threw a strike to the plate, nailing Butler at home to end the inning.
Butler and Ryan LaMarre both had two hits in the defeat.
The PawSox open a three-game series against the Louisville Bats tomorrow in Kentucky at 7:05 p.m. Righthander Aaron Wilkerson (2-1, 2.25) is scheduled to get the start for Pawtucket. Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM) and throughout the Pawtucket Red Sox radio network begins at 6:35 p.m.
