Jones' Blast Helps Hens Steal One from RailRiders

June 16, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

Trying to salvage the fourth game of the series against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after dropping the first three, Toledo's pitching staff buckled down to help the Mud Hens pull away victorious on Thursday night. After giving up a combined 21 runs in the previous three contests, the Hens held them to just two in Thursday's winning effort.

With the pitching staff doing their job and preventing any big innings for SWB, it was time for the Hens' bats to wake up and provide them some run support. The entirety of the day's offense for Toledo came off the hot bat of JaCoby Jones in the third. After picking up two quick outs, RailRiders starter Chad Green surrendered a single in the hole at shortstop to Argenis Diaz. Dixon Machado followed with an inside-out single to right-center that placed men on first and second. Jones stepped to the plate and drove Green's next delivery off the net in deep left-center that allowed the Hens to take a 3-2 lead at the time.

Scranton's lone offense came in the top of the second. Tyler Austin singled to left and scampered to second on a passed ball. Cesar Puello then singled in Austin. Pete Kozma joined the hit parade with a single of his own, and Ben Gamel singled past a diving Casey McGehee to bring in Puello.

Toledo starter Chad Bell limited the RailRider damage to that one inning, as he settled down and worked into the sixth before exiting. His final line included 5.1 innings with seven hits, four walks, and six strikeouts. The lefty improves to 3-1 on the season while lowering his ERA to 3.82.

Bell left in the sixth after walking Puello, and the Hen Pen called all hands on deck. Sidearmer Kurt Spomer came on and gave up a leadoff single that advanced Puello to third. Spomer then picked Puello off, but walked Jonathan Diaz and was removed in favor of Kyle Ryan. Ryan punched out Gamel to end the inning. Logan Kensing was called on to work the seventh and recorded two strikeouts in his frame. Following a perfect inning of work in his first appearance since returning from Detroit on Wednesday, Bobby Parnell posted a scoreless eighth. Closer Bruce Rondon then entered in the ninth and shut the door on a series finale win and his eighth save of the season.

The Mud Hens will welcome the Rochester Red Wings for a three-game home series that is set to begin Friday night at 7:05. They will hit the road next week for three games at Scranton-Wilkes-Barre and three more at Syracuse.
