In Another One-Run Affair, Chiefs Clipped by Tides

Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs' four-game winning streak came to an end on Friday afternoon at NBT Bank Stadium with a 4-3 loss to the Norfolk Tides. It marked the seventh one-run game the Chiefs have played in their first eight games of 2018. Down by one run in the bottom of the ninth inning, Syracuse loaded the bases with no outs against Norfolk relief pitcher Andrew Faulkner. Faulkner induced a fly out and then struck out back-to-back Chiefs batters to end the game and secure the victory for the Tides. Syracuse did post 13 hits for the third straight game, and had five different players tally at least two hits.

Norfolk (4-3) scored the decisive run with one swing of the bat in the top of the seventh inning. With one out and nobody on base, Luis Sardiñas homered to right field, giving the Tides a 4-3 advantage.

The Tides jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Garabez Rosa singled. Michael Saunders followed with a triple into the left-field corner that scored Rosa to give the Tides a 1-0 edge. Andrew Susac then singled, scoring Saunders to extend the Tides lead to 2-0.

Norfolk added to its lead in the second. Rubén Tejada, Jacob Brugman, and Anderson Feliz all singled to load the bases with no outs. Alex Presley followed with a groundout into a double play, but Tejada scored from third base on the play to put Norfolk up 3-0.

Syracuse (5-3) got its first run in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs, Alejandro De Aza worked a walk and Spencer Kieboom singled to put runners on first and second. Irving Falu then singled to center field, bringing home De Aza to trim the the Norfolk lead to 3-1.

The Chiefs tied the game in the sixth. Chris Dominguez led off with a single. De Aza followed with a double that scored Dominuez to cut the deficit to one, 3-2. Kieboom walked and Falu singled to load the bases still with no outs. Michael Almanzar knocked in Dominguez on a fielder's choice groundout to tie the game, 3-3.

The Chiefs and Tides play the third game of their four-game series on Saturday afternoon. RHP Edwin Jackson will make his second start for Syracuse, while RHP David Hess will be on the mound for Norfolk the second time this season. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m.
