Idaho Falls to Owlz
July 25, 2015 - Pioneer League (PL)
Idaho Falls Chukars News Release
OREM, UT- In the second game of a four-game series at Brent Brown Ballpark, the Idaho Falls Chukars lost to the first-place Orem Owlz by a score of 10-4 on Friday night.
In front of 5,200 fans, the Owlz put their magic number at one game to win the Pioneer League South division crown with the victory.
Despite losing their third straight game, the Chukars got the scoring started for the game in the bottom of the first inning. Following a leadoff single from outfielder Cody Jones and a double from outfielderRoman Collins, outfielder Amalaini Fukofuka drove them both in with a two-run double of his own to make the score 2-0.
Unfortunately for Idaho Falls, it was all Owlz from that point on.
Against Chukars starter Dylan Sons, Orem scored three runs on two hits and an error in the first inning, ending his outing with two outs in the inning. The start for Sons was the shortest of his career.
Following a run-scoring single by Jones in the second inning to tie up the score at 3-3, the Owlz broke out in the bottom of the fourth inning against Chukars reliever Tripp Davis (L, 2-2) to put the game away. Sending 12 batters to the plate during the inning aided by two errors, Orem scored seven runs in the frame to finish off their scoring for the night. The inning was highlighted by a RBI triple from shortstop David Fletcher, RBI double from outfielder Renyelmy Mendoza, two-run single by designated hitter Brendon Sanger and a RBI single from third basemen Kenny Towns.
The only other run throughout the night was scored in the ninth inning by the Chukars as catcher Nick Dini came through with a sacrifice fly following a one-out triple from shortstop Marten Gasparini.
From an offensive perspective, the Chukars cranked out nine hits, three of them coming from Jones. Idaho Falls also got two hits apiece from Fukofuka and third basemen Logan Nottebrok.
On the pitching side, the Chukars got a solid combined effort from three Royals rookie pitchers. Between lefties Drew Milligan and Matt Portland as well as righty Brian Bayliss, they combined to shutout the Owlz offense through 6.2 innings pitched, giving up just six hits.
Idaho Falls will continue their weekend series in Orem on Saturday night with game three of a four-game series at Brent Brown Ballpark. The Chukars will send RHP Daniel Concepcion to the hill while the Owlz will counter with a pitcher that is to be determined. First pitch is at 7:15 PM.
