Idaho Falls Chukars News Release
OGDEN, UT -- Idaho Falls didn't have many offensive threats in the final game of the first half of the season. The only multiple hit inning was a ninth frame that saw the Chukars slice two runs off the Raptors lead. With the go-ahead runner at second base, Ogden escaped the jam to win 7-6.
The Chukars (20-18) used the first half finale primarily as a rest day to give the regulars a fresh start heading into the second half. Six of the usual members of the lineup got the night off, while four of the five players with the fewest amount of games played were in the lineup. The lack of regular bats showed, as the Greybirds mustered only two hits up until the eighth. Both of the tallies were off the bat of Luis Valenzuela, including a three run homer to tie the game at three in the third inning.
Jake Newberry was roughed up for the second straight outing. The right-hander lasted six innings, but allowed five runs on eight hits. Ivan Vela and Justin Chigbogu singled in runs to put the Raptors in front in the first. Hunter Redman would follow up in the second with a solo home run. The Raptors hopped back in front in the fifth inning, with back to back doubles by Joe Meggs and Cody Bellinger.
Down 7-4 entering the ninth inning, Idaho Falls posed a threat to Joe Broussard. Cesar Gonzalez doubled off the right-hander, and two batters later, the two out rally began. DonAndre Clark, Luis Valenzuela, and Wander Franco all singled, which cut the lead to 7-6. Lenix Osuna came on to face Brandon Thomasson, and the first baseman grounded out with the go-ahead run at second base.
The Greybirds finish the first half with a 20-18 record, their best first half since the 2009 season. Idaho Falls opens the second half while closing the road trip tomorrow. Javier Reynoso is scheduled to pitch for the Chukars against Jose De Leon for the Raptors.
