Evansville IceMen News Release

FORT WAYNE, Ind.- It took extra time, but the Evansville IceMen, presented by Coors Light, picked up their first win of the preseason with a 3-2 shootout victory over the Fort Wayne Komets. Brandon Wong and Nathan Moon scored in the shooutout, while Cal Heeter stopped 33 total shots to secure the win.

Evansville struck first. At the 7:11 mark of the opening frame, The Komets went behind their own net to the play the puck. However, a forecheck by Kevin Harvey forced an errant pass. Jakub Culek picked up the loose puck and blasted a top shelf shot that found the back of the net and gave the IceMen a 1-0 lead.

The IceMen held that 1-0 lead going into the first intermission. In the second period, Evansville killed off two penalties and carried a one-goal advantage into the final frame. Heeter stopped the first 17 shots he faced.

In the third period, the Komets answered quickly. Fort Wayne got two goals in the first two minutes of the period. Strikes from Christian Oullet and Thomas Frazee gave the Komets a 2-1 lead.

Late in the third period, Kale Kerbashian took the puck away from a Komet defender after Wong forced the turnover. Kerbashian roofed the puck past Pat Nagle to tie the game at two.

The score remained deadlocked after regulation. Although the overtime saw 3-on-3 hockey because of penalties, the extra time ended with both teams tied at two, forcing a shootout.

After the Komets missed on their first attempt, Wong beat Brandon Nagle through the 5 hole to give the IceMen an early advantage.

Frazee went fourth for the Komets and flipped one past Heeter to knot it up. However, this tie was short lived.

The IceMen's next skater, Moon knocked one between the leg pads of Nagle to put the IceMen up 2-1 in the shootout.

Down to their final skater, the Komets sent Kaleigh Schrock to center ice to try and tie it one last time. In the end, Heeter deflected Schrock's shot with his shoulder to secure the victory for the IceMen.

In the victory, Heeter denied 29 of the 31 shots he faced plus four shootout tries to pick up the win. His counterpart, Nagle stooped 30 of 32, but gave up two shootout goals in the loss.

The IceMen wrap up their preseason slate tomorrow when the play the Indy Fuel for the first time at the Fairgrounds Coliseum. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:05 p.m (2:05) Central time).
