Louisiana IceGators News Release

Lafayette, LA -- The Louisiana IceGators and the Florida Everblades were fairly evenly matched in the first period at the Cajundome, today. The Gators put 16 shots on Blades netminder Jeff Maund, but could not get a puck across the line. Derek Gustafson, playing his third straight game in goal for the Gators, stopped all 13 Blades shots at the other end of the ice.

The Louisiana IceGators shot out of the gate in the second frame as captain Bobby Brown opened the scoring 47 seconds in. With the Gators skating hard into the Blades zone, Ben Storey passed from the blue line to a streaking Ed McGrane. Without a clear shot, McGrane passed to Brown, who wristed the puck past Jeff Maund for his 23rd of the season.

Alex Materukhin went on a goal scoring tear and netted three goals in 3 minutes, 22 seconds. He set a new record for the fastest hat trick in IceGators' history and put the Gators up 4-0. Ed McGrane and Jim Vickers both earned two assists on the hat trick, with Bobby Brown and Ben Storey earning one assist each on the record-setter.

Derek Gustafson's second shutout bid was spoiled at 9:54 when Chad LaRose shoveled in the puck on the power play. The Gators' goalie faced only seven shots on goal, as the IceGators kept the Blades busy in their own zone during the second period. The Gators pummeled Maund with 56 shots through 60 minutes.

Ben Storey added another goal to his total, tallying his eleventh goal of the year on a five-on-three power play. Standing at the blue line, he caught a pass from Ed McGrane and blasted the puck straight into the twine. Jamie Johnson extended his points-streak to six games with the second assist on Storey's goal.

The IceGators are on a seven game winning streak, dating back to the January 11th 2-0 shut out of the Pensacola Ice Pilots. The IceGators will have a few days to rest before they host Central division rival Mississippi on Friday, January 30, at 7:05 pm.
