Falcons Lose Dogfight in Long Beach

LONG BEACH, Calif. â In a very chippy game featuring two teams that combined for more than 200 penalty minutes the last time they met, the Fresno Falcons were upended by the Long Beach Ice Dogs, 5-3, on Saturday in front of 3,899 at Long Beach Arena.
The Falcons had the better chances throughout most of the first period when the teams were skating five-on-five. Long Beach created several opportunities on its three power plays in the opening frame, however, finally converting on a five-on-three at 18:55 after John McNabb found Alex Kim all alone at the far post.
The Ice Dogs added to their lead with another power play goal at 5:23 of the second when Nolan Graham knocked in a loose puck after a deflection in front of Fresno goaltender Dave Marlin. The Falcons responded once play settled down again to five-on-five with Scott Borders' sixth of the year at 8:04 followed by Blair Clarance's seventh at 15:59, and the teams were tied at two. Long Beach would take the lead for good, though, two and a half minutes later. Kim walked through the Fresno defense where he was denied by a clutch save from Marlin, but Lee Sorochan hammered home the rebound into a mostly empty net at 18:29 to give the Ice Dogs a 3-2 lead heading to the third.
Long Beach scored twice in the final period â Mark Gouett at 3:44 and Graham with his second of the night at 14:47 â to put the game out of reach. Skating with a two-man advantage in the waning moments, the Falcons' Boris Protsenko scored his seventh of the year for the final margin.
The Falcons now turn right around and travel back to Fresno for a 5 p.m. tilt tomorrow at Save Mart Center against the Las Vegas Wranglers.
