Bakersfield Condors News Release
San Diego, Calif. â Trevor Koenig stopped 29 Bakersfield shots and used masterful penalty killing in the San Diego Gulls 3-1 defeat of the Condors at the Sports Arena on Sunday night.
San Diego took the lead when a pass from Mike Garrow deflected into the slot to a wide-open Mark Pederson. The veteran blasted a one-timer past Shane Bendera for the 1-0 score. Pederson later got into the scorebook again when he was awarded a penalty shot after being hauled down on a breakaway. Bendera was equal to the task however, stopping the Gulls leading goal scorer and preserving the 1-0 score. The Condors led in shots 12-6 through 20 minutes.
The Condors tied it up in the second period, but it took nearly the entire frame. The Gulls endured a stretch of three consecutive power plays to hold onto the lead, but Bakersfield finally connected on the man advantage. Jani Virtanen sent a rocket from the right point past Trevor Koenig for the equalizer at 19:03. The Condors power play has scored in five consecutive games. The 1-1 score lasted 26 seconds. Sylvain Deschatelets notched his 10th of the season with just 31 seconds remaining in the stanza with a wrist shot from the left circle to make it 2-1.
Bakersfield fought to tie the game in the final period, but could get nothing else past Koenig. Keeping the pressure on San Diego late in the game, a turnover led to a breakaway for Billy Tibbetts, and the Gulls forward chipped it past Bendera for the final tally. The Condors fell to 1-5-1 against the Gulls, who moved into first place in the Pacific Division with the win.
