IceDogs Win K-9 Cup Challenge with 5-3 Win over Bulldogs

The Niagara IceDogs were in Hamilton Saturday night to continue the K-9 Cup Challenge - in which the IceDogs have already secured at least a tie. With a win tonight, the IceDogs could secure the Challenge win. These two teams last faced each other last week, where the Bulldogs grabbed their first win of the season series in overtime. Coming into tonight's game, the Bulldogs have won 4 of their last 5 games, most recently a 6-3 loss to the Colts. While, the IceDogs have won 3 of their last 5 games, including an 8-2 win on Thursday at home against the Flint Firebirds.

The IceDogs got off to a solid start to the game, after weathering an early Hamilton storm. Ben Jones capitalized two and a half minutes into the first period, on Niagara's first shot of the game. Jonesy's 25th goal of the season was assisted by Kirill Maksimov and Johnny Corneil. Midway through the first period, the Bulldogs tied the game at 1 on a powerplay.

In the 2nd period, both goalies came out with big saves to preserve the score, but while pressuring the Bulldogs deep in the Hamilton zone, Andrew Bruder bounced on a loose puck and buried it into the open side of the net. The rookies' fourth goal of the season was assisted by Liam Ham and Oliver Castleman. The Bulldogs tied the game at 2 on another powerplay, but the tied score didn't last long. Kirill Makismov slid the puck five-hole to score his 33rd goal of the season to regain the lead late in the period! Maksi's goal was assisted by Justin MacPherson. The 3-2 lead carried into the third period.

The start the third, the IceDogs found themselves on an early powerplay. Despite having troubles earlier in the game with the man advantage, Akil Thomas made no mistake. Thomas roofed his 21st of the season to double our lead and make the score 4-2. Kirill Maksimov was credited with his third point of the game, while Sam Miletic picked up the secondary assist. The Bulldogs pulled themselves within one half a minute later. Stephen Dhillon continued to shine in net for the IceDogs, while we continued to press in the Hamilton zone. Sam Miletic added a late empty net goal, assisted by Kyle Langdon to ice the game!

The IceDogs captured the win in the K-9 Cup Challenge with a 5-3 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs.
