Oshawa Generals News Release

Tonight was an overall evenly matched game, but Niagara was able to pull off the 5-3 win at home. The Generals were coming off a 4-1 win over the Erie Otters on Sunday, while Niagara was fresh off a 7-2 win over Peterborough last night. The Generals were also without Michael Dal Colle and Sonny Hertzberg who are both away at World Junior Camp. Tonight was the second and last time these two teams play each other in regulation this season.

The first chance of the game came from Cliff Pu but Brent Moran made an impressive save for the IceDogs. At 5:43, Sam Harding tapped home a loose puck with assists from Joe Manchurek and Josh Brown, to put the Generals up 1-0. The lead didn't last long as Brian Brosnan of Niagara found the net with a point shot at 6:43. Oshawa received the first penalty of the game with Stephen Templeton in the box for slashing. A minute later, Josh Brown and Anthony DiFruscia received offsetting minors. The penalties continued with Stephen Desrocher getting called for delay of game. However, Aidan Wallace scored an unassisted shorthanded goal to give Oshawa the 2-1 advantage. Moments later, Manchurek went off for tripping and it was five on three for the IceDogs.

The first power play for the Generals came at 17:37 from a tripping penalty on DiFruscia. The IceDogs tied up the game with a goal by Christopher Paquette during four on four hockey. Niagara had more shots on goal after 20 minutes at 15-13. Both teams had a solid period but the Generals showed more pressure on the puck, despite the score being tied at 2-2.

Both teams continued to play powerfully in the second period. An early holding penalty to Templeton gave Niagara a power play but it was after the man advantage that Niagara took the lead. Carter Verhaeghe, a Toronto Maple Leafs prospect, chipped the puck in at 6:36, scoring the only goal of the entire period. Hunter Smith and Aaron Haydon dropped the gloves and both guys put on quite the show for the crowd. Oshawa had their first man advantage of the second halfway through the period but were unable to capitalize. Things got heated near the end of the period with a line scrum resulting in DiFruscia in the box. Again, Oshawa couldn't seem to beat Moran on the power play. Both teams moved the puck quickly throughout the period with some strong battles making it a pretty even period. Shots on net were tied up at 11-11 after 40 minutes.

The intensity continued into the third with the Gens down 3-2. Bradley Latour tied the game up with a goal just over two minutes into the period, with assists by Smith and Carlisle. Latour's goal marked his 10th goal of the season and fifth point in the last three games. After a roughing penalty to Perlini expired, Brown and Wilkie received matching penalties to make it four on four. Vince Dunn had a huge scoring chance but Appleby made a big save to keep the game tied at 3-3. However, a point shot from Haydon at 15:41 found its way past Appleby to give the IceDogs a 4-3 lead. With just over a minute remaining in the game, Perlini scored an empty net goal to put Niagara up by two.

The Generals played some good hockey throughout the game, with shots on goal almost even at 36-35 in favour of Oshawa. Niagara defeated the Generals 4-1 on Nov.28, and found the win again tonight, this time at home. With two more away games this weekend, the Generals will face off against the Erie Otters tomorrow night at 7:00p.m. and again on Sunday against the Guelph Storm in a 6:30p.m. start time.
