Kitchener Rangers News Release
Gustaf Franzen scored the lone goal for the Kitchener Rangers in a 4-1 loss to the Sarnia Sting on Friday night.
Sarnia struck first, opening the scoring 4:15 into the first period. Kevin Spinozzi's shot was tipped past Rangers starter Dawson Carty by Patrick White. The Sarnia sophomore's eighth of the year was also assisted by Stephen Pierog.
The Rangers led shots on goal 10-4 after 20 minutes.
The Sting jumped to a 2-0 lead early in the middle frame, when rookie Troy Lajeunesse picked up rebound, carried the puck behind the net and tucked a wraparound shot under the pad of Carty. Spinozzi picked up his second assist of the night on the goal, Lajeunesse's eighth of the year. Rearguard Jeff King also picked up a helper on the play.
With less than six minutes remaining in the period, import forward Gustaf Franzen put the Rangers on the board, picking up a pass from sophomore Nick Magyar and snapping it past Sting netminder Taylor Dupuis. The goal was Franzen's sixth of the year, and his second point in as many games. Veteran defenceman Max Iafrate also earned an assist, and continues to lead all Rangers blueliners with 17 points.
Kitchener out-shot the Sting in the second period by an 18-7 margin.
Sarnia re-established its two goal cushion midway through the final frame when team scoring leader Nikita Korostelev's recorded his 15th of the year. The import winger snapped a shot past Carty's blocker, with an assist from Alexandre Renaud.
A power play goal from Daniel Nikandrov pushed the Sting ahead 4-1 with less than three minutes remaining. The fourth-year pivot fired a shot from the slot that soared over Carty's glove, giving him nine goals on the year. Assists were credited to Anthony DeAngelo and White, his second point of the night.
The Sting led shots on goal 12-11 in the third, but the Rangers finished with a 39-23 overall advantage on the shot clock.
With the win, Sarnia takes a 1-0 lead in the four game season series.
