IceDogs land in Erie

January 10, 2006 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Erie Otters News Release

A rare mid-week game sets the stage for the Erie Otters this week as they prepare to face the Mississauga IceDogs tomorrow night (Wednesday) at 7:30 p.m. at the Tullio Arena.

Tickets for the game are available at all Erie-area TicketMaster locations as well as the Civic Center Box Office.

The Otters head into the game after a six-game road trip in which they posted a 3-3 record to move to 16-19-3-1 on the season. Erie is tied with the Windsor Spitfires for seventh in the Western Conference (the Otters hold two games in hand), six points behind the Saginaw Spirit.

Mike Blunden and Ryan O'Marra should be rested and back to full effectiveness for the game against the IceDogs after playing four times in three-in-a-half days last weekend.

The veteran forwards began last weekend on the west coast Thursday in Vancouver where they helped Team Canada to a Gold Medal at the World Junior Hockey Championships.

Friday they traveled across the country and landed in Ottawa to join the Otters for the back half of the Otters six-game road trip. Blunden scored two goals and an assist in the three games (to up his season total to a team-high 29 goals and 51 points in 33 games) while O'Marra (third in scoring with 13 goals and 36 points in 32 games) was held to one assist.

Adam Berti rounds out the top three Otters scorers with 20 goals and 20 assists for 40 points in 33 games. The Otters hold a 2-1 advantage in their four-game season series with the IceDogs.

All Quiet on the Trade Front

The Otters did not make any trades as the OHL Trade Deadline passed at 6 p.m. Tuesday evening. Erie did make a roster move, however, as they reassigned rookie forward Jordan Nolan to the St. Catharines Falcons of the Golden Horseshoe Jr. B Hockey League. Nolan, the Otters third round pick in the 2005 OHL Priority Selection, had three goals and four assists for seven points in 33 games with the Otters.

Mississauga arrives in Erie Wednesday with a 15-22-1-2 record good enough for ninth in the Eastern Conference. The IceDogs have surged lately winning seven of their last 10 games to move to within eight points of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Monday the IceDogs sent veterans Dave Pszenyczny, Jordan Grant and Jeremy Whelan to the Barrie Colts in exchange for Nathan Martine and Brett Olipant (the Colts first and second round choices, respectively, in the 2004 OHL Priority Selection). Jordan Owens leads the IceDogs in scoring with 18 goals and 16 assists for 34 points in 40 games.

Tomorrow's game can be heard live on SportsRadio 1330 The FAN and on line at www.ottershockey.com (presented by the James H. Cross Company). Hamot Hockey Night begins with the pre-game show at 7:15 p.m.
