Whalers Trade Vacalv Meidl to Saginaw for Joe McCann

PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP - Plymouth Whalers President, General Manager and Head Coach Mike Vellucci has announced two trades today a few hours before the Ontario Hockey League's Final Trading Deadline at 6:00 pm this evening.
In one deal, Vellucci traded 19-year-old left wing Vaclav Meidl to Saginaw in exchange for 18-year-old right wing Joe McCann and Saginaw's 3rd round draft choice in 2007. Meidl - a Nashville Predators' draft choice selected ninth overall by Plymouth the 2003 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft - had 6 goals with 11 assists for 17 points in 30 games this season. Meidl scored 32 goals with 55 assists for 87 points and 232 penalty minutes in 163 career games with the Whalers.
McCann - 6-foot-3 and 203 pounds from nearby Essex, ON - was originally selected in the fourth round (64th overall) in the 2003 OHL Draft by the Kitchener Rangers and acquired by Saginaw last season. McCann has 8 goals with 10 assists for 18 points and 37 PIM's for Saginaw this season. Between Kitchener and Saginaw, McCann has 13 goals with 17 assists for 30 points and 79 PIM's in 95 career games.
In another deal, Plymouth sent 18-year-old defenseman Scott Madden to the Oshawa Generals for Oshawa's 7th round draft choice in 2007. Madden - acquired by the Whalers in a trade with Mississauga last summer for forward Jeff McFarland - had one assist in 20 games for Plymouth this season.

Meidl and McCann are expected to play for their new teams when Plymouth (21-14-1-3, first place in the OHL West) hosts Saginaw (21-17-0-0, second place OHL West) on Wednesday night at 7:30 pm at the Compuware Sports Arena (7:30 pm, Comcast Local).
