Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs suffered a tough 2-1 shootout loss to the Mississauga Steelheads in Mississauga, but clinched a playoff spot in the process! The atmosphere was electric with over 500 IceDogs fans in attendance to see the IceDogs clinch their playoff spot.

The goaltenders would be the story of the first period as the game would remain scoreless until the 15:17 mark, when Mississauga would find the back of the net to open the scoring. That would prove to be the only goal of the frame as the IceDogs outshot Mississauga 13-7.

The IceDogs would not waste too much time tying things up in the second as they would pounce on a turnover and Billy Jenkins would capitalize to knot things at 1-1. The score would remain that way the rest of the period as the teams headed to an extremely important third period deadlocked 1-1. Shots after 40 were 22-16 'Dogs.

An exciting third would see each team with several chances to take the lead, but both Brent Moran and Spencer Martin would be on their game sending the teams to overtime for the second straight night.

After overtime would solve nothing the teams would end up headed to a shootout for the second consecutive night. However unlike last night, it would be Mississauga that would emerge with the extra point as both Mississauga shooters would score and both Carter Verhaeghe and Brendan Perlini would be stopped, as the IceDogs fell 2-1 in a shootout. Final shots were 31-30 IceDogs.

The IceDogs will now return home to host the Peterborough Petes in the final regular season game in the history of the Jack. A limited number of seats and standing room are still available and can be purchased at any IceDogs ticketing location.

With the IceDogs having clinched a playoff spot, tickets for home playoff games one and two will go on sale this Monday, March 17th at 12 noon. Dates and opponent are still to be determined but stayed tuned to niagaraicedogs.net for the latest!

Thanks to all 10 buses that made it out to join the 7th Man Convoy to see the IceDogs clinch their playoff spot and we will see you all back at the Jack!
