Erie beats Plymouth

PLYMOUTH - The Erie Otters extended a 2-1 first period lead with five unanswered goals in the second period and went on to defeat the Plymouth Whalers, 10-1, in an Ontario Hockey League game played Friday before 2,798 at Compuware Arena.

Erie improves to 51-14-20, good for 104 points and third place in the OHL's Western Conference playoff race. Plymouth is locked into eighth place in the Western Conference and is 27-33-0-7, 61 points.

First star Brendan Gaunce has two goals (28-29) and an assist. Second star Connor McDavid added a pair of second period goals (26-27). Third star Michael Curtis scored twice (26-27) with an assist. Andre Burakovsky (39), Spencer Abraham (8), Dane Fox (league leading 63rd) and Jake Evans (11) scored the other Erie goals.

Zach Lorentz scored the lone Plymouth goal, his 27th of the season, which tied the game at 1-1 at the 13:38 mark of the second period.

Erie outshot Plymouth, 54-25.

Plymouth finishes the regular season on Saturday, hosting Windsor at 7:05 pm at Compuware Arena (7 pm, CN-900 and 88.1FM).

The Whalers will draw the top seeded Guelph Storm in the first-round of the OHL playoffs, starting next Friday in Guelph. The first two Plymouth home games in the series are Tuesday, March 25 and Wednesday, March 26 at 7 pm at Compuware Arena.
