Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs fell to the visiting Peterborough Petes by a score of 5-4 at the Gatorade Garden City Complex on Saturday night.

The first period saw the IceDogs get off to a quick start, as Carter Verhaeghe would open the scoring on the powerplay only 1:45 in to give the IceDogs a 1-0 lead. Peterborough would answer back just before the midway point of the period, tying things up at 1-1. The Petes would not stop there either as they would add another goal less than a minute later, to take a 2-1 lead. A third Peterborough goal just over three minutes later would put the IceDogs down 3-1 and lead to a goaltending change as the IceDogs looked to shake things up a bit. The scoring would settle down over the remainder of the period as the IceDogs headed into the first intermission down by that same 3-1 score. Shots after one were 17-12 Peterborough.

The IceDogs would cut the deficit to one only 2:19 into the second, as Brendan Perlini would score to make it 3-2. Unfortunately for IceDogs fans, Peterborough would restore their two goal lead, making it 4-2 after a long video review led to the goal being awarded. The IceDogs would keep battling and would once again get things within one as Verhaeghe would use a great individual effort to pick up his second goal of the night to make it 4-3. The teams would head into the intermission with that same score and the IceDogs leading the shot total 28-26.

The third period would see the IceDogs pressing hard for the equalizer and they would get it at the 5:14 mark of the frame, as Perlini would pick up his second of the night to knot things up at 4-4. The tie would not last however as Peterborough would answer back less than four minutes later to retake the lead 5-4. The IceDogs would carry the play for much of the second half of the third and they would have their chances, but ultimately could not find the tying goal as they fell by a final score of 5-4. Final shots were 44-36 in favour of the IceDogs.

The IceDogs are now off the rest of the weekend, next returning to action on Thursday night when the IceDogs play host to the visiting Barrie Colts at the Gatorade Garden City Complex. Tickets for this and all other IceDogs home games are still available and can be purchased at all IceDogs ticketing locations.
