Colts Hand Rangers 6-3 Loss

The Kitchener Rangers fell 6-3 on the road to the Barrie Colts Saturday night. Ben Thomson, Tobias Rieder and Matia Marcantuoni were the goal scorers for Kitchener.

The Rangers took a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the first period. Joshua Levio's initial shot on goal was stopped by Barrie netminder Mathias Niederberger, but the rebound bounced onto the stick of Ben Thomson. The veteran winger slid the puck between the goaltender's pads to earn his ninth of the year. Ben Fanelli also assisted on the play.

The Colts tied it up four minutes later when Anthony Camara snapped a shot high glove side past John Gibson. A video review revealed that the puck had cut through the netting and was confirmed as Camara's 24th goal of the season. Sophomore defenceman Aaron Ekblad was credited with an assist.

Kitchener re-established its one-goal lead late in the frame, taking advantage of a power play opportunity. Matt Puempel's pass bounced off Radek Faksa and across the crease to German winger Tobias Rieder. The import forward was standing alone to the left of Niederberger and chipped it in for his third goal in three games and 12th of the season.

The Rangers out-shot Barrie 23-10 in the opening period of play.

Kitchener pushed its lead to 3-1 midway through the second period. Evan McEneny could not beat Niederberger, but Matia Marcantuoni tracked the rebound, turned and fired a shot that trickled across the goal line. Darby Llewellyn added an assist on Marcantuoni's fifth of 2012-13.

The Rangers continued to lead shots on goal with a 23-10 advantage in the middle frame.

Camara's second goal of the game pulled the Colts within one, as Barrie capitalized on a power play opportunity early in the final period. Gibson made the initial save on Zach Hall, but Camara was at the front of the net to pot the rebound. His team-leading 25th was also assisted by Ryan O'Connor.

Barrie leveled the score at 3-3 with a power play tally at 7:11. Camara's between-the-legs pass found newly-acquired forward Mitchell Theoret at the side of the net. Hall picked up his second point of the night with an assist on the former Niagara IceDogs winger's 20th goal of the year.

Andreas Athanasiou gave the Colts their first lead of the game 66 seconds later, carrying the puck over the Rangers blueline and leaving it for Steven Beyers. The overage winger moved it ahead to Erik Bradford who fired a shot that was stopped by Gibson, but Athanasiou was parked beside the net to bury the rebound for his 21st of the season.

The Colts added to their lead less than two minutes later, taking advantage of a delayed penalty to the Rangers. Tyson Fawcett recorded his sixth of the season, lifting a backhand shot over right shoulder of Gibson and into the back of the net. Ekblad and Hall each collected an assist, their second and third of the night, respectively.

Dylan Corson notched a short-handed empty net goal late in the period, securing a 6-3 win for Barrie. The unassisted goal was the centre's second of the season.

The Colts out-shot the Rangers 20-15 in the third period, but Kitchener finished with a 61-40 overall advantage on the shot clock. Niederberger made 58 saves for Barrie in the victory.
