Niagara IceDogs News Release

The IceDogs fell one goal short of a comeback, losing 4-3 to the Kitchener Rangers in the first game of a home and home series.

The Rangers jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as they potted one just 56 seconds into the game. The score would remain the same for the rest of the period, with both goaltenders making a number of acrobatic stops. Mark Visentin made eight saves in the period.

Niagara would run into some penalty trouble early in the second period as both Joel Wigle and Tom Kuhnhackl were sent off on the same play, giving Kitchener a two-man advantage for two minutes. The Rangers would capitalize on the powerplay to extend their lead to 2-0.

Alex Friesen would reply for the IceDogs, finishing off an incredible individual effort by roofing the puck over the John Gibson. Kitchener added their second goal of the period to restore the two goal lead heading into the intermission.

Niagara would receive a powerplay early in the third period, but it was the Rangers who found the back of the net, beating Visentin shorthanded to increase their lead. Friesen would solve Gibson one more time to score his second of the game, and cut the Kitchener lead to 4-2. Ryan Strome would score only minutes later to trim the deficit to one.

Niagara sustained pressure in the offensive zone late in the period, including a number of quality scoring chances, but were unable to beat Gibson for a fourth time, ultimately falling 4-3.

The IceDogs will now return to Niagara to host the Rangers in the second game of the home and home series on Saturday night.
