Petes Drop Majors 5-2
November 4, 2011 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
It's a battle every night in the very competitive Eastern Conference of the Ontario Hockey League, and the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors are finding that out in recent games.
The very much improved Peterborough Petes won their third straight game, downing the Majors 5-2 to hand the Majors their second loss in as many nights before 2,952 fans at the Hershey Centre on Friday night.
Peter Ceresnak, Austin Watson and Matt Puempel all had a goal and an assist for the Petes (9-5-2-1), while goalie Andrew D'Agostini made 29 saves. Lino Martschini and Slater Koekkoek scored the other goals for the Petes.
Derek Schoenmakers had a goal and an assist to lead the Majors (10-5-0-2), while Riley Brace scored his 10th goal of the season for Mississauga. Spencer Martin made his home regular season debut for the Majors in goal and made 35 saves as the Majors were out-shot 40-31.
"I think we're still struggling too much with turnovers and that really cost us tonight," Mississauga General Manager/Coach James Boyd said. "They took advantage of our mistakes and that was the difference tonight."
The Majors did not take a single minor penalty in the game, and only five minutes in total as a result of a Schoenmakers fight with Luke Hietkamp with just 2:09 left in the game.
But the Petes killed off all seven Mississauga power plays and added a short handed goal to boot, as the Majors gave up 40 shots for the second straight game after surrendering 44 in a 2-1 loss to the Brampton Battalion on Thursday night in Brampton.
"Going 0-for-7 on the power play won't win you too many games in this league," Boyd said. "On the other side of the ledger we were taking too many penalties early in the season but I thought we weren't nearly aggressive enough tonight.
"We have to continue to stay out of the penalty box of course but we also have to be more aggressive winning battles, especially in our own end."
The Majors opened the scoring at 2:52 of the opening period when Brace converted a pass from Schoenmakers to grab the early lead with the first period's only goal. But the Petes carried the play for the rest of the period, out-shooting the Majors 16-9 in the opening 20 minutes.
Peterborough tied the score on Koekkoek's goal just 1:38 into the second period, and went ahead for the first time on Martschini's tally at 14:57. Then with just 16 seconds left in the second period, Schoenmakers tied the game off a scramble in front to send the teams to the intermission tied 2-2.
The Petes scored three unanswered goals in the third, however, as Ceresnak, Watson and Puempel all scored to give the Petes the win.
The loss drops the Majors into second place in the Eastern Conference standings behind the Ottawa 67's, who were 5-1 winners over the Owen Sound Attack at home. Mississauga still leads the Central Division by two points over Brampton, who were 4-2 losers at London.
The Majors host the Belleville Bulls Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Hershey Centre. Tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.ca or at the Hershey Centre box office during regular business hours.
