IceCaps Sink Pirates 4-3

ST. JOHN'S, NL - The St. John's IceCaps held on to down the Portland Pirates 4-3 Wednesday night at Mile One Centre to sweep the two-game set.

Carl Klingberg's third period goal stood as the game-winner while Kael Mouillierat notched a goal and an assist to go along with a team-high six shots on net. Vinny Saponari added his first pro goal and Jason Jaffray picked up his 15th of the season.

Mark Dekanich stood tall for the second consecutive game, making 28 saves for the victory. Ben Maxwell chipped in with a pair of assists.

St. John's got the first goal for the second straight night on a power play at 14:14 of the opening frame. Eric O'Dell got the puck to Mouillierat near the right circle, who attempted a pass in front to Josh Lunden that deflected off a leg and past Pirates goaltender Chad Johnson for Mouillierat's 11th, giving the home team a 1-0 lead.

The IceCaps went up 2-0 just 2:01 into the second on Saponari's first pro goal. Travis Ramsey made a terrific outlet pass to Adam Lowry, who carried the puck through the neutral zone and towards the net. Lowry attempted to set up Tomas Kubalik but the puck defelcted off a Pirates defender and off the pad of Johnson before popping out to Saponari, who went skate-to-stick to make it 2-0.

Portland cut the lead in half several minutes later. Phil Lane picked up the puck near the right boards and whipped a hard pass in front that was redirected past Dekanich by Darian Dziurzynski to make it 2-1.

The Pirates evened the score on a power play at 8:25 of the second. At the tail end of the penalty to Patrick Cullity for holding, Jordan Martinook burst in on goal and went five-hole on a two-on-one to fool Dekanich and tie it at two.

St. John's retook the lead with just over five minutes to go in the middle stanza during some four-on-four action. Maxwell passed to Will O'Neill on the left side, who fed Jaffray in the slot for a one-timer and the temporary go-ahead goal, giving the IceCaps a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes of play.

Klingberg scored his 10th of the season early in the third on an IceCaps power play to give his team a two-goal cushion. Klingberg slammed a rebound into the top corner of the net past the blocker of Johnson to put St. John's up 4-2.

The Pirates made it close with another power play marker at 17:22 of the first on a David Rundbland point drive but that was all the visitors could muster as the IceCaps held on for their second victory in a row.

St. John's closes out the home portion of its schedule this weekend with a pair of tilts against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Saturday and Sunday. Notes: Kael Mouillierat extended his point and assist streak to five games while Eric O'Dell extended his point streak to four games... Ben Maxwell picked up his fourth multi-point game (2A) in the last seven contests... Adam Lowry notched his first career point (an assist) on Vinny Saponari's first pro goal in the second period... Carl Klingberg's goal was his first in the last 12 games... Mark Dekanich has won seven of his last nine starts.
