Knoxville Ice Bears News Release

Knoxville, TN - The Knoxville Ice Bears returned to home ice with 4,510 fans in the stands at the Civic Coliseum after a Thanksgiving Day game in Fayetteville. Knoxville lost to the FireAntz in overtime 3-2.

Fayetteville took an early lead in the first period. Ice Bears' Co-captain David Segal was penalized 2 minutes just 34 seconds into play. At 52 seconds the FireAntz scored a power play goal. Knoxville tied the game at 1 at the 8:54 minute mark. Ice Bears forward Peter Neal chipped the puck off the boards to himself and skated unabated in the FireAntz zone to blister a shot in top corner of the net to beat the goaltender, Peter Skoggard.

The Ice Bears pushed ahead to end the first period leading 2-1. Cody Dion knocked the puck, it bounced off Skoggard, and found the net with 7:21 minutes left in the period. Eric Satim and Brett Valliquette assisted Dion's seventh goal of the season.

Segal received a 2 minute penalty for slashing and a 10 minute game misconduct 48 seconds into the second period, but Fayetteville's efforts on the power play were shut down by the Ice Bears defense. At 7:22 minutes the FireAntz were able to score a power play goal to tie the game at 2 while Satim was in the box for tripping.

At 7:36 Kevin Kessler was given a 2 minute penalty for roughing putting Knoxville on the power play. Then at 8:14 Fayetteville's Brandon Greenside joined him in the box for tripping, leaving the Ice Bears skating 5-on-3.

The Ice Bears weren't able to capitalize during the power play time. After Valliquette and Jeff Martins dropped their gloves for a fight with 1:34 minutes left, the second period ended with the teams deadlocked at 2, and Knoxville outshooting the visitors 22 to 12.

Both teams battled to break the tie in the third period, but both goaltenders held the fort. The game moved into SPHL 5 minute, 3-on-3 overtime. With 3:16 left in overtime play, Knoxville captain Mark Van Vliet was sent to the box for hooking giving Fayetteville a 4-on-3 advantage. Then 32 seconds later Klaver was penalized for slashing putting the FireAntz on a 5-on-3 power play. With 2:17 minutes left, Fayetteville clinched the win with a power play goal.
