Louisiana IceGators News Release
Biloxi, Miss. --One of the main tenants of the Louisiana IceGators' game plan is crashing the net and putting shots on goal in traffic.
That game plan paid huge dividends Saturday night.
Adam Stuart scored off a rebound from a Jake Trask shot at 5:36 of the third period to give the Louisiana IceGators a 1-0 victory over the Mississippi Surge.
The IceGators (11-3-1) return to the Cajundome next weekend for a two-game series against the Fayetteville FireAntz. Game time on both Friday and Saturday is 7:05 p.m.
"Well, it was a chess match," said IceGators head coach Kevin Kaminski. "Both teams played very well, but both teams were tired. The boys stuck to the foundation and put on a little more grease in the third period. We were resilient and we got the win."
The game was duel between the two goaltenders. Louisiana goalie Kiefer Smiley picked up his second shutout of the season, stopping 30 Surge shots. Mississippi goalie Dan Clarke stopped 39 of the IceGators' 40 shots.
"Kiefer came up big on a few breakouts to preserve the shutout," Kaminski said.
The IceGators will take a few days to rest and get ready for the weekend. Kaminski says that break is well-deserved considering his squad improved its lead in the SPHL standings to four points.
"I'm very proud of the character these guys bring to the rink every day," Kaminski said. "The boys will get a much-needed two days off to get ready for a big weekend at home."
