Louisiana IceGators News Release
LAFAYETTE, La. - One night after losing a close game to the Knoxville IceBears, the Louisiana IceGators bit back with a vengeance.
Louisiana dominated all aspects of the game to beat the Knoxville 3-1 in Saturday night's regular season finale. Goalie Brad Barone was spectacular between the pipes, stopping 26 of the 27 shots he faced.
The IceGators will host their first game of their President's Cup quarterfinal series against the Mississippi RiverKings Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. in the Cajundome.
"It was a good warm up game leading into the playoffs," said IceGators head coach Drew Omicioli. "It's a great team win. We got production from everyone--our defense, our goaltending, and our offense. Everyone was phenomenal. We had good physicality. Knoxville plays a physical game, and we didn't let it get under our skin. We battled through the nonsense. We could have scored more, but (Knoxville goalie Brian) Billett played well and kept them in both games this weekend."
Zac Frischmon opened the scoring 11:26 into the first period when he rebounded a Massimo Lamacchia shot. Brad Bourke also assisted on the play.
Luke Sandler made the score 2-0 on a power play at the 8:42 mark of the second period when he tipped in a Jordan Ciccarello shot while screening out the goalie.
Matt Robertson added an insurance goal at the 5:40 mark of the third period when he took a feed from Jeremy Boyer and scored from the left wing.
Knoxville finally got on the scoreboard with 1:44 left in the game when Zack LaRue scored off a Doug Reid feed, but it was too much, too little, too late.
"We're going to start prepping on Monday and focus only on Mississippi," Omicioli said. "We're going to watch film from the last time we played them. Even though we beat them, they outplayed us in that last game. We need to fine-tune a few things because this is going to be a tough series for us. We should have Tanner Burton back, and we've added (defenseman) Bo Driscoll from Huntsville, so that should help us, too."
