Knoxville, TN - The Knoxville Ice Bears erupted for three goals in the opening period to beat the Macon Mayhem 5-2 on Saturday night.
Brad Pawlowski had a goal and an assist for the Ice Bears, who have collected points in 13 of their last 14 games.
Trevor Hertz put Knoxville on the board with a one-timer from the high slot that zipped over the left shoulder of Curtis Martinu. Doug Reid followed up three and a half minutes later with a wrist shot from the left circle that snuck inside the short side post.
Garrett Vermeersch put the exclamation point on the first period when he dangled between two defenders in the slot and flipped a backhand over Martinu's blocker giving Knoxville a 3-0 lead heading into the dressing room.
Dennis Sicard put Knoxville up by four late in the second period. Mark Rivera and Jackson Brewer scored the first two goals of the third period to cut the deficit in half. Pawlowski sealed it for the Ice Bears with a slap shot from the right circle with eight minutes remaining. Pawlowski leads all defensemen in the league with nine goals scored.
