Mississippi RiverKings News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Mississippi RiverKings (25-14-7) tied the game with 23 seconds left in regulation to force overtime and knocked off the Pensacola Ice Flyers (24-17-4) in a shootout 4-3 on Saturday night in Pensacola.
The teams exchanged goals at the five minute mark of the first. Charlie Adams first goal of his professional career as his shot beat RiverKings goaltender Peter Di Salvo to put the Ice Flyers up 1-0. Then, 23 seconds later, Cullen Bradshaw redirected a pass from the half wall from the slot past John McLean to tie the game at one.
Pensacola then took the lead two minutes later. Adam Pawlick tallied his sixth goal against the RiverKings as he slid a shot past the right leg of Di Salvo to give the Ice Flyers a 2-1 lead with less than four minutes to go in the first period.
After a scoreless second, Pensacola took a two-goal lead early in the third. Adams notched his second of the game on a shot from the slot from Stephen Buco 3:43 into the third period to put the Ice Flyers up 3-1.
The RiverKings battled back late in the third. Ryan Marcuz ripped a slap shot just above the left wing face off circle that beat McLean to bring the RiverKings within one. Then, with the Ice Flyers shorthanded for a too many men on the ice call and Peter Di Salvo on the bench for the extra attacker, Linden Bahm's wrist shot off a faceoff in the Pensacola zone beat McLean to tie the game at three to force overtime with under 23 seconds left in regulation.
For the second consecutive night, the game headed to a shootout. In the shootout, after Joey Holka and Corey Banfield scored for Pensacola and Cullen Bradshaw and Matt Harrington scored for the RiverKings through the first five rounds, the shootout headed to sudden death. Bradshaw then converted on a backhand shot before Di Salvo denied Holka to give the RiverKings their second straight victory.
Peter Di Salvo (11-3-2) stopped 30 of 33 shots against in the win. John McLean (13-7-3) took the loss after stopping 40 of 43 shots against.
The RiverKings scored once on five power play opportunities, while Pensacola was held scoreless on four chances.
