Austin Ice Bats News Release

(Austin, TX) - Competitive is the only word to describe the season series between Corpus Christi and Austin this year. Four of their five previous games had been decided by one goal, two of those in a shootout. So it was no surprise that another shootout was needed to decide a victor Friday night when the Bats traveled to the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, TX. Austin pulled out the divisional win 4-3.

It was an offensive first period between both teams and four goals were scored in period one. Justin Quenneville put Corpus on the board first, just :34 into the game. RG Flath tied the game up with a power play goal for the Bats. John Ronan and Jason Tessier tallied the assists, it was the eighth goal of the year for Flath. Mike Bartlett gave the Bats a 2-1 lead with his seventh goal of the season. Brendan Cook and Aaron Wilson had the assists. Finally, Corpus would tie the game up at 2-2 on a rebound goal by Kevin Watters.

In the second period each team banged home another goal, but the focus went to Miguel Beaudry. Geno Parrish gave Corpus Christi a 3-2 lead on assists by Jay Latulippe and Quenneville. Then the Ice Bats tied it up on the power play as Henry Kuster scored his ninth goal of the year. Ronan and Flath tallied the assists. In the closing minutes of the period, Ice Bats Goalie, Miguel Beaudry single handedly kept the score tied as he stopped a breakaway effort by Joel Quenneville, a penalty shot from Quenneville (who was hooked on his breakaway), and then Beaudry made a sliding glove save on a two-on-one shot off the stick of Jon Jankus to keep the game tied at 3-3, heading into the third.

Neither team could score in the third period or overtime, so Austin and Corpus headed to their third shootout this season.

In the shootout, Jason Tessier and Brendan Cook scored for the Ice Bats. Geno Parrish scored for the Rayz, but Joe Blaznek could not beat Beaudry in the final round. The Ice Bats pull off the 4-3 victory.

Next up for the Ice Bats is a home contest against the Laredo Bucks Saturday night at 7:35 PM at Chaparral Ice Arena. The game has been sold out to Austin-based company, National Instruments.

The Ice Bats are the AA Affiliate for the NHL's Minnesota Wild and the AHL's Houston Aeros (AAA). The team is currently playing its 12th season in Austin. Single game tickets and mini-plans are available by calling 512-927-7825 or visiting icebats.com.
