Ice Bats edge Rayz 4-3 in SO

In the first game back from the CHL All-Star break, the Corpus Christi Rayz and the Austin Ice Bats put on a show at the American Bank Center on Friday Night. After a wild affair, the Ice Bats outlasted the Rayz 4-3 in a shootout. Corpus Christi picked up points for the fifth time in six games this season against Austin, and moved to 14-17-5. The Rayz improved seven points ahead of the Amarillo Gorillas for fifth place in the Southern Conference standings. Corpus Christi's next game will be Sunday at 4:00pm in Laredo. Corpus Christi returns to the American Bank Center on Tuesday Night, Jan. 22nd to once again host the Austin Ice Bats at 7:05pm. Individual tickets are on sale now. In his first game back after missing 12, Rayz forward Justin Quenneville wasted no time getting back on the scoresheet. Quenneville converted a Nick Lindberg pass on a two-on-one for a goal 34 seconds into the game, setting the tone for a wild first period. The Ice Bats answered on a power play at 4:55 when R.G. Flath scored on a bad angle shot from the bottom of the left circle. The Bats then took a 2-1 lead at 14:14 on a beautiful goal by Mike Bartlett. Bartlett froze Jason Tapp with a fake shot from the right circle and then wrapped around the net and stuffed the puck home for the Bats first lead of the night. The Rayz then tied the score on a power play of their own when Kevin Watters notched his team-leading 15th on a rebound at 15:59. The Rayz outshot the Bats 13-12 in the period.

In the second period, the Rayz recaptured the lead when Geno Parrish tallied from the bottom of the right circle at 11:54. Austin, however, tied the score at 3-3 when Henry Kuster scored a power play goal at 16:55. The Rayz got a penalty shot opportunity with 1:56 to play in the period while they were shorthanded. Quenneville was pulled down from behind and awarded a penalty shot at 18:04, but denied by a glove save from Miguel Beaudry. Later in the period, Beaudry robbed Jon Jankus with an unbelievable glove save sprawling to his right. The Rayz outshot the Bats 15-14 in the period, and the teams went to the third period tied 3-3.

After a scoreless third period and overtime, the Rayz and Bats went to a shootout for the third time this season. The Bats scored twice in the shootout withJason Tessier and Brendan Cook converting, and the Rayz went only 1-5 with Geno Parrish scoring for Corpus Christi.

Jason Tapp made 42 saves on 45 shots and fell to 14-14-4. Beaudry made 40 saves on 43 shots, improving to 7-13. The Rayz went 1-5 on the power play, and the Bats were 2-7. The Bats outshot the Rayz 46-43.
