I-Cubs Topple Aces

Iowa Cubs News Release

RENO, NV - Iowa (58-51) never trailed after a five-run third inning and the I-Cubs sunk the Reno Aces (49-60) 7-4, Wednesday at Greater Nevada Field. The win snapped a five-game losing skid for Iowa.

Iowa's big third inning began with Matt Swarmer going first-to-home on a Jim Adduci double after the starting pitcher reached on a fielder's choice. A Zack Short home run brought in another set and a two-RBI double off the bat of Trent Giambrone capped the effort.

Reno answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to keep the game close, then pulled within two on a Max Murphy homer in the sixth after two quiet innings.

The I-Cubs got their bats going again in the seventh, taking advantage of an error to get Mark Zagunis on. Addison Russell followed with a walk and Giambrone's second double of the game brought in Zagunis. A Johnny Field sac fly pushed in Russell to give Iowa a 7-3 edge.

The Aces worked a run in the seventh, but that was all Iowa pitching would allow. Swarmer (W, 6-10) exited after 6.0, allowing three runs off seven hits. The righty walked two and fanned three on the way to his first win since June 25. Danny Hultzen pitched a shutout ninth to secure the first save of his professional career.

POSTGAME NOTES:

- Addison Russell is 4-for-7 with two walks and an RBI since getting optioned by Chicago.

- Trent Giambrone, Russell and Mark Zagunis all tabbed multi-hit games.

Iowa and Reno play the rubber match at Greater Nevada Field Thursday at 9:05 p.m. Follow the action on AM 940, TuneIn Radio or www.iowacubs.com.
