Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Salt Lake City, Utah - Starting pitcher Daniel Corcino dealt six scoreless innings and the Oklahoma City Dodgers tallied 12 hits in a 5-3 win over the Salt Lake Bees Wednesday night at Smith's Ballpark.
Corcino (8-4) did not yield a run and scattered three hits, earning his team-leading eighth win of the season. He finished with three walks and four strikeouts and limited Salt Lake to 0-for-9 with runners on base.
The start of the game was delayed by 42 minutes due to rain earlier in the evening. Once play got underway, both teams were slow to get things going at the plate. Through four innings, neither team had scored a run and the Dodgers and Bees had combined for three hits.
The Dodgers (51-57) broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning with a two-out RBI single by Gavin Lux.
The Bees (48-61) got a leadoff double by former Dodger Josh Thole in the bottom of the inning, but Thole never advanced past second base, as Corcino used a groundout and two strikeouts to keep Salt Lake scoreless.
The Dodgers missed a chance to add to their lead in the sixth inning after loading the bases with one out, but Shane Peterson struck out and Jon Kemmer grounded out to end the inning.
But in the seventh, the Dodgers scored twice make it 3-0. With runners at first and second base and none out, Austin Barnes hit an infield single and Salt Lake third baseman Kaleb Cowart committed a throwing error on the play, allowing Drew Jackson to score. Edwin RÃ-os followed with a sacrifice fly to give OKC its largest lead of the night.
The Bees jump-started their offense in the eighth. Salt Lake loaded the bases with one out and Jarrett Parker sent a broken bat flare into shallow right field to score two runs and move the tying run into scoring position. After a forceout at second base and stolen base, the Bees had runners at second and third base with two outs, but Dodgers reliever Josh Sborz induced a flyout by Thole to end the inning.
The Dodgers got some breathing room in the ninth inning. With two outs, Kyle Garlick ripped a RBI double and Connor Joe followed with a RBI single to make it 5-2.
Taylor Ward led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a solo home run, but Dodgers closer Kevin Quackenbush retired the next three batters to end the game and earn his ninth save.
Bees starting pitcher Nick Tropeano (2-5) allowed just one run and four hits over five innings, but ended up with the loss. He notched eight strikeouts and did not allow a walk.
The Dodgers finish their three-game series in Salt Lake City looking for a sweep at 8:05 p.m. Central time Thursday. Live radio coverage of each game begins 15 minutes before first pitch on AM 1340 "The Game," 1340thegame.com and through the free iHeartRadio or MiLB First Pitch apps.
