Iowa Cubs News Release
Highlighted by a six-run fourth inning, the Iowa Cubs (54-65) edged past the Sacramento River Cats (70-49) 7-6 Wednesday afternoon at Principal Park to complete the series sweep. In the four-game set, Iowa outhit Sacramento 50-32 and outscored the River Cats 35-14
The River Cats got out to an early 2-0 lead on Jay Jackson and the Cubs in the third inning. Chris Carter singled to lead off the frame and Josh Donaldson followed with a walk. After an infield fly out, Adrian Cardenas worked a full count at the plate against Jackson. Sacramento sent the runners in motion on the payoff pitch, which kept them out of a double play on the Cardenas groundout. With men in scoring position, Andy LaRoche connected on a two-run single to put the River Cats on the board.
Sacramento starter Graham Godfrey sent the Cubs lineup down in order and was perfect through three innings, but Iowa got to him in the fourth. Brett Jackson started the inning with a single, and Scott Moore walked with one out. Bryan LaHair doubled home both runners to tie the game. Steve Clevenger lifted a singled to right field on an 0-2 pitch to knock in LaHair and put the Cubs ahead 3-2. After a walk and an error loaded the bases, Ryan Flaherty added an RBI sac fly. Jonathan Mota's broken-bat two-run single capped the big inning and the Cubs lead swelled to 6-2.
Flaherty doubled in the sixth inning, and was driven in on a B. Jackson RBI-double which made the score 7-2.
J. Jackson (6-12) picked up the win for Iowa. He retired nine straight batters before exiting the game after completing six innings. He allowed two runs on three hits, walked one, and struck out five batters.
With J. Jackson out of the game, the River Cats offense came to life against the Cubs bullpen. They scored a run in the seventh on a Carter RBI-single off Carlton Smith. In the eight inning, Brandon Allen launched a three-run home off Justin Berg to make it a one-run game.
Blake Parker made quick work of the River Cats with a 1-2-3 ninth inning to secure the victory and earn his second save of the season. He now has 26 career saves with the I-Cubs which is 5th on the all-time list.
Godfrey (11-3) was charged with the loss. He pitched four and two-thirds innings and allowed six runs (three earned) on just five hits. He walked three and struck out three.
Following an off-day, the Cubs will head west for an eight-game road trip beginning in Tacoma on Friday at 9:05 p.m. Casey Coleman (4-2, 3.91) will take the mound for Iowa against Luke French (8-7, 5.81) for the Rainiers.
