Oklahoma City Baseball Club News Release
Tucson, Ariz. - J.A. Happ allowed one unearned run and four hits over six innings with strong defensive support, as the Oklahoma City RedHawks (53-66) rallied with two runs in the ninth inning for a 2-1 win over the Tucson Padres (54-64) before 2,630 Wednesday night at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium.
RedHawks reliever Juan Abreu (1-0) took the winning decision after a perfect eighth inning. Ryan Rowland-Smith (1) picked up his first save since April 20, 2008, when he finished a Seattle Mariners win at the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Tucson closer Brad Brach (1-3) took the losing decision and his first blown save by allowing two runs in the ninth inning.
J.A. Happ allowed one unearned run with four hits, three walks and five strikeouts in his first Triple-A outing of 2011. Happ dealt 84 pitches with 48 strikes and was supported on the defensive side with two double plays, three diving catches in the outfield, one outfield assist on a play at home and a diving stop on a groundout at third base.
Tucson opened the scoring in the third inning. Eric Patterson reached second base on a dropped fly ball error by left fielder Jake Goebbert with two out. Anthony Rizzo next hit a soft single to centerfield to drive in Patterson for a 1-0 score.
The RedHawks missed middle inning opportunities to score against Tucson starter Samuel Deduno. OKC had two on with one out and bases loaded with two out in the fourth but could not score. In the fifth inning Oswaldo Navarro led off with a double but was left stranded at second when the next three went down in order. In the sixth inning Brett Wallace led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch with no outs. Chris Johnson, J.R. Towles and Drew Locke went down in order to end another threat.
Oklahoma City finally broke through in the ninth inning. Towles led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Goebbert lined a single off the end of the first baseman's mitt to score Towles for a 1-1 deadlock. Goebbert later moved to second on a groundout and third on a wild pitch. Pinch-hitter Robinson Cancel next singled to right field and scored Goebbert for a 2-1 win.
