Huskies Get Back in Business with Close Win
August 10, 2018 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Duluth Huskies News Release
The 2018 Duluth Huskies have set a franchise record for total wins in a season with 46 as they won 5-4 over the Waterloo Bucks tonight. After a tough start to the road trip, the Huskies look to be back on track as they pulled away to win a close game.
Waterloo took the early lead in the first inning, but Duluth quickly answered with an RBI single by Antonio Monroy (Georgetown College) to tie the game.
Augie Voight (William Penn) got the nod for his first start of the season. While he allowed a few runs, the plan all along was a bullpen by committee, and the bullpen was strong. Four pitchers combined to go from the second through the ninth and allow just one run.
Offensively, it was Nick Sogard (Loyola Marymount) who had a great night. The shortstop had two hits and three walks, to take the league lead in that latter category.
The winning pitcher was Troy Newell (Western Kentucky) who pitched in relief for the first time this year. Newell pitched two shutout innings as Duluth made the comeback with two runs in the sixth.
The save went to Jack Corbell (Miami Ohio) who pitched fantastic in the last three innings, with four strikeouts including a 93-mph fastball.
The win moves the Huskies to 46-24 overall, 22-12 in the second half, for the most wins in franchise history, breaking the record set in 2013 when the Huskies won 43 games in the regular season and another pair in the playoffs.
Next up for the Huskies is a long trip to Bismarck to take on the Larks. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m from Bismarck Municipal Stadium.
