Madison, WI. - The visiting Green Bay Bullfrogs (28-42, 16-18) tallied nine unanswered after trailing 6-0 early in the contest to secure an exciting 9-8 triumph over the host Madison Mallards (47-23, 19-15) from The Duck Pond at Warner Park Friday evening. The Bullfrogs sweep Madison for the first time this season and finish the 2018 season series against the Mallards at 4-4.
Madison grabbed the early 2-0 advantage on a two-run blast by Tyler Plantier. The Mallards stretched their lead with a four-spot in the third inning, starting with a RBI double by Trevor Schwecke and ending with Jake Randa's three-run homer to make it a 6-0 game.
The Bullfrogs quickly stormed back with an impressive nine-run rally. Preston Pavlica (Junior, Grand Canyon Univ.) cut the deficit down to 6-2 in the top of the fourth with a two-run shot for his fourth homer of the season.
Green Bay followed with a crucial a six-run fifth inning. The rally began with a two-run blast by Blaise Maris (Sophomore, Florida Tech) for his fifth dinger of the season to trim the margin to 6-4. Riley Mihalik (Junior, Rider Univ.) then laces a RBI single to make it a 6-5 contest. A RBI double from Pavlica tied the game at 6-6 before a two-run triple from Blake Nelson (Junior, Michigan) gave the Frogs their first lead of the night at 8-6.
The Frogs scratched across their ninth straight run in the sixth with Keaton Smith's (Junior, Nevada) third bomb of the summer to stretch the lead to 9-6. Madison fought back to make it a 9-8 game in the eighth on a RBI single by Jesse Forestell and another run scoring on an error, but it would not be enough as the Bullfrogs earn a narrow one-run triumph.
Pavlica led the Green Bay offense going 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while Maris and Adrian Damla (Sophomore, UC Irvine) also both went finished 2-for-5 at the dish. Nelson was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in. Smith also contributed a 2-for-4 effort with a RBI and two runs scored.
Green Bay starting pitcher Luke VanLanen (Senior, Valparaiso) earned the win, improving to 2-0. Madison relief pitcher Andrew Baker took the loss, dropping to 0-2. Bullfrogs reliever David Toth (Freshman, Hillsdale College) notched his fourth save of the season.
The Green Bay Bullfrogs begin their final two-game series and play their last road game of 2018 tomorrow night, facing the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. First pitch is slated for a 6:05 p.m. start at Witter Field.
