Huskies Drop Second Game in a Pure Pitcher's Duel
May 31, 2022 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Duluth Huskies News Release
Mankato, Minn - The Duluth Huskies suffered their second loss of the season on Tuesday night, falling 2-0 to the Mankato MoonDogs.
It was a masterful night of pitching from both sides. Mankato and Duluth combined for 25 strikeouts while giving up just six hits and three walks.
RHP Jake Hamilton got the start for the Huskies and shoved early on. The Oklahoma Baptist product retired the first 11 Mankato batters, including four strikeouts in his first four innings.
Hamilton gave the Huskies five shutout innings in his first Northwoods League appearance, striking out six batters and allowing just two hits. Illinois State's Mason Burns also tossed a shutout inning in his first appearance for Duluth, adding two strikeouts.
The game was scoreless through six, but Mankato grabbed the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Nick Altermatt launched a solo home run to right field to give the MoonDogs the lead, then Zach Stroh laced an RBI single to left field to double the hosts advantage. Both runs came against Trent Martin, who struck out four in two innings of work out of the bullpen.
Southpaw Owen Boerema returned to the Northwoods League in dominant fashion for Mankato. The rising junior at Northwest St. Paul didn't allow a hit until the top of the eighth, when Joe Vos was able to slap a single through the middle of the infield. Vos now leads the Huskies with three hits this season after a multi-hit performance on Opening Night.
Boerema finished with the win, throwing eight shutout innings, giving up just one hit, one walk, and a league-leading 11 strikeouts. Trent Martin was given the loss for Duluth. Tyson Neighbors was able to record the save for the MoonDogs, despite surrendering a leadoff walk to Mookie Redmond. The Huskies left three runners on base throughout the contest.
The Huskies will open their home schedule tomorrow against the Minnesota Mud Puppies. It will be the first game of the season for Minnesota, who are playing their second season in place of the Thunder Bay Border Cats. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. at Wade Stadium.
