Duluth Huskies News Release

Duluth, Minn - Coming off a four-game road trip where the Huskies went 1-3, they were happy to be back at home at Wade Stadium. Lead by dominant pitching and timely hits, Duluth (5-10) was able to take down the Minnesota Mud Puppies (2-7), 7-3.

Right-hander Matthew Craven made his first start for the Huskies, and after giving up one in the top of the first inning, the Kentucky native was able to settle down and push through.

With the Huskies down 1-0 going into the bottom of the third, it was the Arkansas Razorback, Zac White, who was able to get the rally started. After an ensuing single by one of the heroes of Saturday night's comeback against Waterloo, Jesse Pierce, and Mike Boeve being hit by a pitch, Ryan McDonald tied the ballgame up at one. Blayne Robinson walked on a full count to reload the bases, and then in stepped Ambren Voitik, who hit a triple in the 10th inning on Saturday night.

He wanted another. On the first pitch Voitik saw, he ripped a triple into the left-center gap, clearing the bases, and giving the Huskies the lead for good, up 5-1 through three.

Mud Puppies starter, Tom Skoro, was replaced after the third inning, but the damage had already been done.

Craven went four innings in his first start, giving up seven hits, two runs, and striking out five. Then came the fireball right-hander, Nate Wohlgemuth.

Wohlgemuth retired the first nine Mud Puppies he saw, striking out eight, and retiring a stretch of six batters by the way of the K. He would come out of the game after four innings with the Huskies up 7-3, giving up one hit, a run, and striking out eight on his way to his first win of the season.

After a series against St. Cloud on Thursday and Friday where the Huskies issued 27 walks and committed nine errors, the pitching staff and defense responded, committing no errors and only giving up four walks as they pick up their fifth win of the season, 7-3.

Game two between the Mud Puppies and the Huskies is set for 6:35 p.m. back at Wade Stadium as the Huskies go for their first series sweep of the 2021 season.
