Hughes silences Defenders with a one-hit masterpiece

June 23, 2006 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release

The Connecticut Defenders struggled with the bats against the Yankees 2004 number one draft pick, Philip Hughes in a loss. The Defenders were shut out for the 13th time in 2006 by a score of 4-0

Early on, the Defenders had the odds stacked against them, with Trenton getting on the board in the bottom of the first. Brett Gardner singled and stole second base. He was then knocked in on a Bronson Sardinha RBI single to make the score 1-0. Chris Begg settled down after that, allowing only two singles from the 2nd through the 5th inning while walking nobody, but it was Sardinha again in the 6th inning with the solo home run. Trenton would add another run in the inning to make the score 3-0. The Thunder made it 4-0 on a Gardner RBI single in the 7th.

In the mean time the run support was not there against Yankee prospect Philip Hughes. Hughes struck out six of the first eleven batters he faces, and had a no hitter going into the 8th inning when Derin McMains broke it up with a lead off double. McMains was stranded at first. Hughes pitched eight innings of one hit ball, striking out one and walking one. J.B. Cox finished the effort in the 9th inning, retiring the Defenders in order to complete the 4-0 Thunder victory.

On Saturday, righty Garrett Broshuis (3-4) will battle for the Defenders against Tyler Clippard (3-9), the Trenton Thunder right-hander. The first pitch is at 7:05 as the Defenders will attempt to snap a four game skid.
