Howell & Lakovic Named to Hockey Canada's U17 Development Camp
June 9, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
Marek Howell and Lynden Lakovic will represent the Moose Jaw Warriors at Hockey Canada's under-17 development camp next month in Calgary.
The Warriors' 2021 draft picks will be among the 100 players aiming to crack the squad that will compete at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in November.
"The Warriors organization would like to congratulate Marek and Lynden on being selected to Canada's U17 development camp," Warriors general manager Jason Ripplinger said. "This is a great achievement for both players and we wish them all the best."
Howell was selected by the Warriors with the 16th overall pick in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft. The defenceman made his Western Hockey League debut during the 2021-22 season, posting a goal and two points in five games.
Howell also added eight goals and 14 points in 33 games with the Calgary Royals under-18 AAA team this past season.
Lakovic came to the Warriors with the 27th overall selection in the second round of the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft.
Last season, the six-foot-five forward picked up 18 goals and 27 points in 33 games with the West Van Academy under-18 prep team.
He also suited up for one game with the Warriors.
Alan Millar, director of player personnel for Hockey Canada and former Warriors general manager, led the player selection process.
"The national under-17 development camp is the first stage in introducing these athletes to the Program of Excellence, and it is a great opportunity for them to develop as players and learn what it takes to wear the Maple Leaf," Millar said in a media release. "We look forward to enhancing these young players' ongoing development during this camp and starting the process of building our three national U17 teams for the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge this fall."
The 100 players invited to the development camp, which will take place from July 10-16, include 10 goaltenders, 30 defencemen and 60 forwards.
There are 37 players drafted by WHL teams invited to the camp.
The next step will come after the players are evaluated during the start of their 2022-23 seasons and from there, 66 players will be named to one of Canada's three national teams that will compete at the 2022 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge from Nov. 5-12 in Langley and Delta, B.C.
