Hot-Shooting Herd Too Much for Red Claws

Oshkosh, WI - February 8, 2020 - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, got in an early hole and couldn't overcome the deficit, falling to the Wisconsin Herd 134-118 in a matchup of the top two Eastern Conference teams in the NBA G League.

Maine (22-9) loses for just the 3rd time since New Year's. The Red Claws were led by Yante Maten, who had a monster game with 34 points and 15 rebounds. Jaysean Paige added 26 points off the bench, while Tremont Waters added 16 points and 8 assists. Bryce Brown finished with 15 points while going 5-7 from three-point range.

Wisconsin (25-8) was led by Jaylen Adams and Frank Mason, who each scored 26 points. Trevor Lacey added 20 points in the win.

The Red Claws and Herd started the game by trading three-pointers. Dorian Pickens knocked in a triple, followed by Jaylen Adams the other way. Wisconsin got off to a quick start, and Luke Maye's three capped a 10-0 run and gave the Herd an 18-9 lead. The Red Claws went 4:00 without scoring a point. The Herd lead swelled to 12 before Jaysean Paige hit a three. Paige hit another triple to make it a 25-21 game. Wisconsin when back on a 8-0 run to go back up 10. The Red Claws trailed 33-28 after 1.

The Herd scored 10 quick points to open the 2nd. Waters stopped the run with a three-point play, but Cameron Reynolds' alley-oop put Wisconsin up 11. Yante Maten, playing in his first game since injuring his ankle last Saturday, had an impressive first half both scoring and rebounding the ball. Maten and Paige carried the Maine offense at times, each scoring 18 in the first half. The Red Claws got it to 7, but Jaylen Adams' three at the buzzer gave Wisconsin a 75-60 halftime lead. Adams scored 21 points in the first half to lead the Herd.

Wisconsin picked up right where it left off in the second half, scoring 5 quick points. Frank Mason's three put the Herd up 20. Waters' three-point play got it back to 13 at 85-72, but D.J. Hogg answered with a three-point play of his own. Maten's hook shot cut it to 11 points, and Paige's three cut it to 87-79. Maten's bucket got it to 6. The Red Claws trailed 99-89 after 3.

In the 4th, the teams traded buckets early. Waters and Maten ran the pick & roll to perfection, cutting the deficit to 109-103. From that point, Wisconsin would go on a 15-2 run, led by Trevor Lacey's two huge threes. Wisconsin swelled the lead to 124-105. The Red Claws could not overcome the deficit.

Maine shot 45% (43-95) from the floor, 39% (14-36) from three-point range, and 11-16 from the free throw line. Wisconsin shot 49% (48-98) from the field, 48% (24-50) from beyond the arc, and 8-11 from the charity stripe.

The Red Claws return to action Monday at Windy City.
