Kane County Cougars News Release

BURLINGTON, IA - Ben Hornbeck pitched five innings of near-perfect relief, and four different players had two hits Tuesday night as the Kane County Cougars won their fourth straight game, beating the Burlington Bees, 6-4, at Community Field in Iowa..

Hornbeck (2-0) has faced Burlington in each of his first two outings of the season and has won both while combining for 10 innings of one-hit ball with 13 strikeouts. He worked as a tandem pitcher with starter Brett Hunter, who gave up four runs in four innings and got a no-decision.

The Cougars fell behind, 1-0, in the bottom of the first, but Dusty Coleman drove in Grant Desme in the second to tie it against Zach Peterson (1-1). Then the Cougars scored three times in the third. Jason Christian notched a sacrifice fly, Franklin Hernandez singled home David Thomas, and Steve Kleen scored on an error for a 4-1 game.

The Bees managed to tie the affair in the fourth off Hunter, but Thomas blasted a homer leading off the fifth, and Coleman plated Hernandez with another RBI single in the sixth for the 6-4 score that became the final. Hornbeck retired the first 13 hitters he faced and allowed one hit, walked one and struck out seven for the victory.

The Cougars (8-3) and Bees (2-8) continue the four-game set Wednesday night at 6:30 CDT when Matt Fitts (0-2, 6.00) faces Brent Fisher (0-0, 5.40).
