Focused 'Caps hand Tincaps first loss

FORT WAYNE, IN- The West Michigan Whitecaps dealt the Fort Wayne Tincaps their first loss of the season Tuesday night, 5-2, after rain showers delayed the start of the game for thirty minutes. Four ‘Cap pitchers combined for a solid outing, and great team defense was again a key to the victory.

The game was a showdown of the top two teams in the Midwest League's Eastern division. It was also billed as a battle of the reigning league pitcher/hitter of the week. Fort Wayne starter Anthony Bass was undefeated, and Billy Nowlin of the ‘Caps was red-hot at the plate.

Ronnie Bourquin got the scoring started in the fourth when brought home Brandon Douglas with a clutch RBI single to right. The Whitecaps would add two more runs to their total in the fifth. Consecutive singles by Brent Wyatt and Brandon Douglas set the stage for Jordan Newton's two-run triple to make the score, 3-0.

Fort Wayne came right back with a run of the their own in the fifth. Daniel Robertson's solo homerun to left put the Tincaps within two runs.

But the Whitecaps struck for single runs in the seventh and eighth innings as Billy Nowlin's RBI double put the ‘Caps ahead 5-1 going into the home half of the eighth.

Two doubles by Fort Wayne added another run in the eighth, but the result was a 5-2 Whitecaps win.

Brandon Douglas finished 3-5 with a triple, a double, and a single. Jordan Newton had two hits including the two-run triple.

‘Caps starter Casey Crosby went 3.1 innings, striking out 5 but walking six. He did not allow a hit or a run. Matt Hoffman (2-0) got the win as he came on in the fourth for some great relief work. Tyler Stohr pitched the eighth, and Erik Crichton picked up his first save in the ninth.

The Tincaps will host the Whitecaps for game two of the series in a morning game, Wednesday at 11:05 a.m., at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne. The Whitecaps are now 8-2, and Fort Wayne stands at 10-1.
