Hops Streak Ends at Salem-Keizer
August 12, 2015 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Hillsboro Hops News Release
The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes might want to find a way to get Nolan Riggs on the mound three times next week.
In three meetings this season, the Hops have yet to figure out the 6-8 right hander, who tossed six scoreless innings and benefited from an early five-run outburst in the Volcanoes' 7-0 win over Hillsboro Tuesday night.
The victory pulls the Volcanoes (28-23 overall) even with Hillsboro (30-21) atop the Northwest League South Division standings, with both teams at 8-5 since the midway break.
The Volcanoes pounded the Hop's starting pitcher for the second consecutive night, knocking Tyler Mark off the hill after two innings following eight hits and five runs. Miguel Gomez and C.J. Hinojosa each hit home runs in a four-run first inning. Salem-Keizer outhit Hillsboro 11-3 in a dominant performance
Meanwhile, Riggs continued his mastery of the Hops lineup. WIth two dominant relief appearances in the two previous series against the Hops in Hillsboro, Riggs extended his streak of scoreless innings against the Hops to 14, holding Hillsboro to just three hits over six innings with a pair of strikeouts and three walks. The Hops got a runner to second base just two times. The Hops were hitless against Riggs for a combined 10 innings before Galli Cribbs base hit leading off the third inning.
The Volcanoes bullpen closed out the whitewash by retiring the final nine Hops batters in a row as Salem-Keizer recorded its second win against Hillsboro in nine tries.
Hinojosa went 3-for-4 at the plate for the second straight night and finished the series 7-for-12 with two doubles, a triple, two homers, two runs and three runs batted in. Junior Amion extended his hitting streak to ten games with an RBI single in the first inning and Chris Shaw went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI, walk and run scored.
Gerard Hernandez reached base twice on an infield hit and walk on a night where Hop highlights were hard to find.
Jefferson Mejia extended Hillsboro's streak of scoreless innings pitched by the bullpen to 19 innings before surrendering an unearned run in the fifth inning. The Volcanoes scored an earned run off Troy Marks in the sixth.
Hillsboro returns to Ron Tonkin Field Wednesday night for the first game of a five-game homestand against the Vancouver Canadians. Arizona Diamondbacks' number one draft pick Dansby Swanson, the top overall pick in the 2015 Major League Amateur Draft, is expected to make his pro debut. Swanson was the starting shortstop for the Vanderbilt Commodores in two consecutive College World Series championship series.
Game time is 7:05 p.m. Wednesday night with pregame coverage beginning at 6:35 p.m. on Rip City Radio 620 AM.
