Hillsboro Hops News Release
VANCOUVER, B.C. --- In their ugliest game all season, the Hillsboro Hops committed five errors on Sunday afternoon --- three by shortstop Sergio Alcantara --- and dropped their third straight game in Vancouver, 6-2, to fall under .500 (5-6). The 2014 Northwest League champion Hops didn't lose three in a row until August 8-10 --- the only time they dropped three in a row all season.
Hops pitching held Vancouver to just two singles, but both were important. Hillsboro starter Tyler Bolton hit Earl Burl III with a pitch leading off the bottom of the third. He stole second and advanced to third on a fly out. Vancouver's Lane Thomas singled to right to score Burl with the game's first run. After Thomas stole second, he scored on an errant throw from Alcantara, his third error in three innings.
The score remained 2-0 into the top of the sixth. Hillsboro leadoff man Zach Nehrir walked, and with two out, Hops designated hitter Stephen Dezzi homered to right --- a ball that hit the very top of the 19-foot-high right field fence and kept going. It was the Hops' first home run in eight days, and it tied the game, 2-2.
The key inning was the bottom of the seventh. Mike Cetta came on to relieve Bolton, who allowed just two runs (one earned) on one hit in six innings. Cetta promptly hit the first batter to face him, and after a stolen base, Cetta issued a walk. Vancouver's Juan Tejada laid down a sacrifice bunt, and when Cetta ill-advisedly threw late to third, the Canadians had the bases loaded with nobody out. Burl singled to left to drive home two, and Tejada also scored on the play when Hops left fielder Gerard Hernandez air-mailed his throw to the backstop. Burl would later score the fourth run of the inning on a wild pitch.
The five errors is one shy of the franchise high set June 21, 2013 at Everett in the seventh game in franchise history.
Hillsboro plays two more games in Vancouver, Monday and Tuesday nights at 7:05.
