Salem-Keizer snapped its five-game losing streak in emphatic fashion Saturday night, defeating the Spokane Indians 12-3 at Volcanoes Stadium. The 12 runs were easily the most the Volcanoes had scored in a game this season, besting their previous mark of four runs.
The Volcanoes have struggled mightily with the bases loaded this season - Salem-Keizer batters had gone 1-for-17 with the bases juiced coming into Saturday's game. Fittingly, the situation presented itself again in the second inning and the Volcanoes finally cashed in.
Indians' starter Nick Green (0-1, 5.59 ERA) allowed one-out singles to C.J. Hinojosa and Jose Vizcaino Jr. before hitting Fernando Pujadas, loading the bases for Steven Neff. Green made it easy for the Volcanoes right fielder, throwing a wild pitch and allowing Hinojosa to come in and score. Neff then grounded out, scoring Vizcaino Jr. Salem-Keizer wasn't done either, as Julio Pena hustled out an infield single that scored Pujadas and put the Volcanoes up 3-0. The three-run frame was, at the time, the biggest inning for Salem-Keizer so far this season.
Salem-Keizer tacked on two more runs in the fifth. Neff led off the inning with a walk and quickly advanced to third when Julio Pena singled on the first pitch he saw. Junior Amion later lifted a sacrifice fly into center, scoring Neff. Chris Shaw then punched a single - the first hit of his professional career - into right, scoring Pena and pushing the Salem-Keizer advantage to 5-1. Shaw, the 31st overall selection in the 2015 Draft, was making his first start for the Volcanoes.
The Volcanoes really blew things open in the sixth. The first five Volcanoes batters reached in the inning and with already two runs in, Ronnie Jebavy crushed a three-run home run off the scoreboard. Jebavy has two home runs in only three professional games since joining Salem-Keizer.
Miguel Gomez led off the seventh inning with a solo home run of his own, his first of the season. The homer also meant that every batter in the Salem-Keizer order reached base on the evening.
Volcanoes starter Mike Connolly (1-0, 3.38 ERA) was tremendous, allowing only one run on four hits while striking out four in five innings of work.
