Hooks Salvage Series Split

Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - If you like long balls and triples, Whataburger Field was the place to be Wednesday night.
Teoscar Hernandez, Jon Kemmer, and Brett Phillips homered and Brian Holmes leveled his record at 4-4 as Corpus Christi trounced Midland 9-3 before 5,058 by scoring five in the eighth.
Phillips, A.J. Reed, and Chan-Jong Moon had three-base hits for the home team as the Hooks (13-13; 61-35) salvaged a series split with the RockHounds (16-10; 51-45).
Hernandez popped a solo home run to left off Tim Atherton as the Hooks took a 1-0 first-inning lead. The long ball was Hernandez's 10th.
Kemmer's 12th homer - a two-run shot in the second - increased the margin to three. Atherton issued a free pass to Jio Mier before Kemmer's blast.
Holmes struck out four during the first two innings in a six-up, six-down sequence. He walked lead-off man Jaycob Brugman and allowed singles to Nick Rickles and Ryon Healy in the third, but escaped the bases-loaded jam by inducing Rangel Ravelo's ground out to first.
Holmes wasn't as fortunate an inning later. He walked Renato Nunez to open the Midland fourth, and two outs later Brugman cracked an opposite-field homer to left, his fifth.
Two batters into the Corpus Christi fourth, the Hooks owned a 4-2 advantage. Reed's first Double-A triple (his fifth of 2015) preceded a sacrifice fly from Colin Moran.
The RockHounds then made it a one-run game again, Ravelo's double just inside the third-base bag plating Chad Oberacker (hit-by-pitch).
Holmes retired for the evening having booked five innings, five hits, two walks and seven strikeouts over 98 pitches. Atherton (5-4) went a frame deeper and was responsible for five hits, three walks, and three strikeouts.
Moon's inside-out, bases-loaded triple off Andres Avila into the left-field corner extended the Hooks lead to 7-3 in the eighth, and Phillips followed with his initial Double-A home run.
Travis Ballew worked a scoreless inning in relief of Holmes and Aaron West fashioned a three-inning save, his third.
Hernandez, Phillips, and Reed have six-game hitting streaks. Midland's Chad Pinder has hit in 16 consecutive contests.
The Hooks play a four-game series in Frisco Thursday through Sunday, returning to Whataburger Field vs. San Antonio July 27-28-29.
