Springfield Cardinals News Release
North Little Rock, AR - The Springfield Cardinals struck for two runs in the top of the ninth, and then escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth, coming from behind for the 6-5 win against the Arkansas Travelers before 2,634 fans at Dickey-Stephens Park on Tuesday night.
In his first game back from the PanAm Games, LF Anthony Garcia helped lead the Cardinals with a 4-for-5 night, including the game-tying RBI double in the top of the ninth.
The Travelers (12-13, 48-46) dealt the first blow with three runs in the bottom of the second against LHP Jimmy Reed. A 3B Brian Hernandez double started the stanza, followed by a free pass from CF Blake Gailen. 1B Michael Snyder then reached on a fielding error committed by 3B Patrick Wisdom, loading the bases with no outs. Reed battled back with a strikeout of DH Wade Hinkle, but RF Cal Towey floated an RBI single to shallow center field to crack the scoreless tie. SS Eric Stamets then chopped a two-run double inside the third base line, opening the Arkansas advantage to 3-0 early on.
Reed got back on track with a 1-2-3 inning in the third, before the Cardinals (13-12, 43-52) got on the board in the top of the fourth against RHP Albert Suarez. With one down, LF Anthony Garcia sparked the rally with a base hit to center field. 1B Jonathan Rodriguez followed suit with a single of his own, sending Garcia around to third base with Rodriguez taking second on the throw to third. C Michael Ohlman then ripped a two-run single inside the left field line, plating Garcia and Rodriguez to increase his team-leading total of RBIs to 53 and bring the Cardinals within one run, 3-2.
After another perfect inning from Reed in the bottom of the fourth, the Cardinals tied it in the top of the fifth. SS Matt Williams led off with a sharp single, before moving to second one out later on a walk from CF Charlie Tilson. After a fielder's choice hit into by DH Mike O'Neill, the Cardinals had runners at the corners with two away for Garcia. Garcia ripped a game-tying RBI single to center field, bringing home Williams to even it, 3-3.
A solo shot by Stamets started the bottom of the fifth and lifted the Travs back in front by one run, before Springfield squared it once again in the top of the seventh. RF David Washington started the stanza with his second single of the game. One out later, an O'Neill walk and Garcia's third single of the night loaded the bases with only one down. After a strikeout, Washington raced home from third when C Raywilly Gomez had a passed ball get by him, tying the game at 4-4.
After RHP Chris Thomas had dealt the scoreless sixth for Springfield, RHP Kurt Heyer (W, 3-0) followed with a scoreless bottom of the seventh. However, the Travs moved back in front in Heyer's second inning, the bottom of the eighth. Leading off the frame, Gailen pulled a solo shot to right field, lifting Arkansas back in front, 5-4, through eight innings.
The Cardinals, however, refused to go down without a fight, rallying once again in the top of the ninth inning against LHP Greg Mahle (L, 1-1). With one away, Tilson extended his 13-game hitting streak with an infield single. O'Neill then chopped an infield single of his own to third base, putting two on with only one away. Garcia then came through again, ripping a game-tying RBI double to right field to bring in Tilson and move O'Neill to third. Rodriguez followed next with an RBI single that touched down in right field, plating O'Neill from third for the 6-5 lead for Springfield.
Cardinals RHP Kyle Barraclough (S, 8) took over for the bottom of the ninth and started the frame with a fly out before the Travs threatened. With one down, 2B Sherman Johnson and LF Drew Maggi knocked back-to-back singles, followed by a walk from C Raywilly Gomez to load the bases. Barraclough, though, won the battle against Hernandez with a strikeout of the All-Star third baseman for the second out. Gailen then ripped a line drive inside the first base line, but Rodriguez was right there for the catch, robbing Gailen of what would have been a game-winning double for Arkansas and instead saving the 6-5 win for Springfield.
